His phone rings thirty seconds later, and he hasn’t even said anything when Ashley begins the conversation with a burst of, ‘what?’
‘Obvious answer,’ he says with a shrug, lurches to his feet to pace, feels even more confined now. Homeless is a big word, and he doubts very much that she’s actually homeless, but the thought that she is being inconvenienced, that she’s in any kind of trouble, it makes him itch, his trigger finger twitching. ‘Move in here. You can have the bedroom; I’m hardly home anyway. Should be room in the lounge to rearrange it and get a fold-out for when I’m here.’
‘Leon,’ Ashley says, with a laugh, ‘Leon, I – I’m not going to put you out, that’s ridiculous.’
‘It’s not putting me out if it’s my idea,’ he says, as though she’s stupid. She’s not, she’s incredibly intelligent, is on track to graduate with honours, top of her class. But she’s not thinking.

He glances down the hallway to look for any sign of Leon, hoping there aren’t any of those awful licker monsters in here—Marvin’s heart seizes in his chest. Because there, splayed on the ground in the dim bluish light of the broken vending machine; brand-new uniform splattered in gore, is Leon, a pool of blood slowly forming beneath his broken body.
