I've been trying to rationalize it. Tell myself it's just scientific curiosity. I mean, Rocky and I are the only human-Eridian research team in existence. It makes sense that I'd want to understand his biology more completely. Document everything for posterity. Fill in the gaps in our xenobiological knowledge.

“What human do when restless, question?” Rocky asks me from his starfish position. I half-ass one last sit-up, then flop onto my back, mirroring him.
“Uh. Depends on the human, I guess,” I say, chest rising and falling as I recover my breath. I wrack my brain for examples. “Exercise, mostly. Like going for a walk, or to the gym—that’s a special building just for exercising. Or, you know you can play sport, go dancing, have sex—”
Rocky perks up at that last word, and I immediately regret it.

Rocky leans in, so their carapace is almost all Grace can see. “Grace needs to use his words.” The notes are so deep and bassy that the translation software struggles to pick them up, but Grace manages to make them out.
“Rock— please,” he’s pleading now.
He can hear the satisfaction mixed together with the same unplaceable tone from earlier, can feel it in the way the vibrations reverberate through the rock into him. Grace feels it in his bones, right down to his core. “Use right words.”

Okay, we’re getting somewhere, even if he’s still acting really weird. He hasn’t tried to sass me even once yet. His whole demeanor is strange.
“So there is something wrong,” I hiss, triumphant. “I knew it.”
He huffs. 'Not wrong,' he burbles. 'Meant to happen. Expected. '
