Chance blinked. “Oh.”
That prompted Mafioso to look up at last, observing the gambler’s features in anticipation– fear being the number one expectation. Though, it wasn’t fear that crossed the other’s expression. Rather, it was concern. Steady and genuine.
“How long?” They then questioned, one of their hands being drawn up to Mafioso’s arm, grasping with quiet affection.
The man hesitated. And that was all they needed to know.
Too long.

Martin had—at least once, back in 1948, when the ship from the Vatican disembarked at San Francisco Bay. They said the Eastern Vampires lived among us; they appeared, spoke, and acted like us. There was never any significant difference between humans and these blood-thirsty savages. Martin had always considered this an old tale, passed down through generations to frighten children.
Vampires were never real. They were fictional creatures.
