Nowadays he stays present by making note of all the things he has, as The Listener taught him to. Cicero has a new home and his very own room, he has seven shiny gold coins in his pocket and deathbell leaves in his pouch, there are three buttons and twelve nails and fifteen pebbles in the jar on his bookshelf. He has had thirty-eight birthdays and the thirty-ninth is coming up soon so he hopes The Listener will be back before then.

The Lonely does that to people, really gets in there and fills up your lungs until you’re choking on it and haven’t even noticed you’re drowning while spitting up seafoam.

Breakable and sharp and in need of careful keeping, he is a chore. Burdensome to tolerate at the best of times, unbearable at his worst. Summary
The night of Halloween finds Lee having to trade her shiny Mary-Jane’s for clunky rain boots, unsurprised by the unfavorable weather. The neighborhood they drive to is the type of cookie cutter suburbia that normally makes Lee sort of squirrelly, houses too close together and lawns too manicured, but when everything is cloaked in nighttime and alight with Halloween decorations with the promise of candy at every door…well that’s different. Other kids trick-or-treat in little groups of threes and fours and fives, chattering amidst themselves and unconcerned with Lee who remains alone.

Summary
“I am what was done to Michael Shelley.” It says, shrinking from a mother’s intense eye. Then it hunches inward, sinking to the muddy grass so it may pull its skinny legs to its hollow chest. Michael wishes she would stop looking at it that way.
It wants to tell this man it has no mother, that the son she is looking for is dead, but the person it was born from howls inside its head until Michael cannot bring itself to tell the truth. To become a butterfly, a caterpillar weaves itself a cozy little cocoon to sleep in before its entire body disintegrates and becomes caterpillar soup until that primordial goo shapes itself into a butterfly. The butterfly remembers being a caterpillar, it knows due north and the hand that raised it, but it is not a caterpillar.
Michael feels like it is a misshapen insect, a big ugly cuckoo bird that thinks it's a sparrow, a barn cat raised by dogs so it tries to bark and only hisses.

What sits outside the rest stop is not the same person, it isn’t even a person at all, but neither is it not. A contradictory mistake of nature that eats blue peanut M&M’s first, swearing they’re the best, and drinks Pepsi with a straw so the sugar wont hurt his teeth. Its teeth, rather. Can Michael even get cavities? Well, regardless, there is Michael and there is Michael Shelley and they meet in the middle as Gerry sits beside it and shares one of his ear-buds connected to a scratched up old Walkman.
A headphone cord links them together as they murmur conspiratorially, heads bowed until nearly touching. Michael tips a handful of M&M’s into its palm and picks blue first, offering it to Gerry.

The psychiatrist at work said it’s survivor’s guilt and that might be part of it, but mostly it’s that she watched someone die choking on his own blood and spitting out his own gnarled teeth. Lee doesn’t even know what she expected out of that, why she went to see him all alone, only that an inescapable pull in her gut drove her down to the holding cell and the way he had smiled at her hurt. He looked at her like she mattered to him, like he cared about her. Maybe even loved her, in some way.

“I was…I was going to tell you, when I came back from Sannikov.” Michael breathes it out like cigarette smoke, where it curls around them in the rain. He looks down at their joined hands, his own freckled knuckles and Gerry’s flaking black nail-polish. “I had this whole corny letter and everything, wrote it down on the plane so I could practice.”
“What did it say?” It feels equal parts tender and devastating, watching Michael’s downturned eyes - the fan of his pale lashes against his cheek.

“I knew you were coming.” She admits. “No one ever comes to visit us; not family and not big bad wolves, but I knew someone was. I saw it in a dream.”
“Cuckoo bird, what did you see?” He asks fervently, all wide-eyed intensity as he hangs on her every word.
“A goat.” Harker fidgets with the zipper on her windbreaker, anxious that he will be mad the way momma was. Her mother’s anger is familiar, but if he were to scold her as well it would feel devastating. “I was standing in the snow and a big black goat was waiting for me in the driveway. It had huge horns and shiny black eyes and it didn’t say anything, but I knew someone was coming.”
She brings her hands up behind her head, mimicking it’s great big knotted horns. Longlegs copies her and his hands are big enough that the silhouette he makes with his knobby fingers is almost perfect. In the dim basement light, she could swear it looks like he has horns for real.

She feels strange now, not unpleasant by any means - simply different. Like the girls in fairytales who trade seeing unicorns for something magical in a different way. Ellen was never visited by sweet, innocent, things like that and so to her Orlok is the equivalent exchange.

They go from Oregon down the coast of California, because Lee knows the border into Canada will be on the first line of defense they put up - anticipating her to try and leave the country. Maybe they will some day, but it’s not much of a thought in her head right now. At a truck stop in San Francisco she takes Dale into the little restroom and breaks the bad news she must cut his hair.
“It makes you stand out.” She encourages. “I won’t cut it too short, when we settle you can grow it back out and dye it again.”

Some days, he wonders if he should’ve stayed below. Alan will stand on the shore of Cauldron Lake, bare feet in the rocky sand with his trousers rolled up around his ankles as the waves drag him closer. Maybe he will walk right into the lake and never stop, simply end up floating on the lake-bed like Barbara Jagger. If he went down, would he ever come back up? Is the Dark Place waiting for him in the ocean, or has it fractured away into nothingness without Scratch there to hold it all together? Which came first; hell or the devil? Something in the back of his brain tells him that deep dark ocean still holds so much left unexplored, a world upon other worlds. One day, when the only one left of this story that remains is Alan Wake himself, he may return to it again.

Scratch knows why Alan is so tetchy with meeting people, why he doesn’t call home unless he absolutely has to, why things with Alice were sometimes so bad she would spend weekends at her parents house under the excuse ‘Alan’s got a deadline, he’s just so busy!’. Her parents always hated him, he doesn’t blame them. Maybe they could see the lie inside him, smell it through his pores like rancid sweat. If anyone gets too close, Alan is certain they would see it too.
