No one saw the empty beer bottles Jesus guzzled down just to sleep at night. No one saw the pain relief patches, or the bandages wrapped around Jesus’s aching muscles. No one saw the mess that Jesus had made of his tent because he didn’t have the energy any longer.
Well, no one except Mary knew that. And Judas made it his business to find out.
Or; being a leader is depressing, but less so if you have a lover and a friend.

Jesus laughs. Open and unrestricted. The skin around his eyes creases as his shoulders shake. The sight makes Judas’ heart swell. Increasingly, Jesus is aloof, distant. He spends too long looking out into some nebulous middle distance that only he can see. Most days it’s impossible to keep a solid grip on him. Knowing Jesus is like trying to hold on to the last vestiges of daylight even as they slip away. But it makes moments like these all the much more precious. When he laughs he looks not so much like a leader and more like an ordinary man.
If Judas could spend a lifetime making Jesus laugh that would be enough for him.
- After a long day, Judas falls ill. Jesus gives him a gentle scolding for not taking better care of himself.
