The vex grinned down at him, the expression just as sharp as it had been the evening before. He took a step away from Grian, raising his hands up in mock surrender as he looked almost on the verge of laughter.
"Calm down, little sheriff, I'm not going to hurt you yet."
Grian froze. Every single defence system he had ever created in his mind went up all at once, and he folded his arms in front of him as skills he'd spent years without using suddenly bubbled back up to the surface.

His superior leans forward, a rare and amused glint in his eyes. “Let’s make it public knowledge that Triple-Seven has left the Watchers. And it wasn’t a happy break-up.”
Grian takes off his hood, then his face mask. “So, what you’re saying is…”
“Let’s put you undercover Triple-Seven. And make it convincing.”

Summary
Grian is lonely. A few months in the woods with only deer for company would do that to a person.
But he expected that when he agreed to do this field study by himself - funding was short, and no one else would step up. And he likes it, to an extent - the solitude of the deep green woods gives him time to think, to be away from all the things that make him anxious.
And yet, when a supply drop-off never arrives, he can't rid himself of the notion that the dread he feels predicts something far, far worse than the desolation of his own company.
