So when Killer Queen was being written, spooky_action and I were discussing Eoin and Paddy when they were both younger, and how Eoin, who wanted no one but Paddy, had suppressed his heats ('his heat pains') and Paddy had fussed and worried and finally realised what was going on. He had no expectations of being invited to Eoin's heat, his beautiful boy could have anyone. When Paddy is chosen - when he is chosen, spooky_action said, "Oh, how he dotes."
Here is Paddy, first chosen, and already doting.

Summary
In the dim light of the dying fire, Paddy reaches over and rests his hand on Eoin's chest. “My ma, the poor woman, called me Blair. That's my name. Robert Blair Mayne.”
“Robert Blair Mayne”, Eoin repeats, the words melting in his mouth like Eucharist. He will never write this, he thinks, even when there is no risk in it. He could never give this to someone else. He turns and touches Paddy's cheek with a shaky hand, the scruffy beard needles into his palm. “So you are.”
In which everything that could have gone wrong at the beginning of the war has gone wrong, and a war reporter named Eoin meets Paddy, trying to fight off the invasion of Britain from France.
