As CEO of Wayne Enterprises, coming home to an empty bed (except for when one of his kids has a nightmare) after a long day is something he tries not to think about too hard. For Clark, night is when the connections he's severed start to gnaw and the things he's lost can catch up.
And then their paths cross. Clark Kent is like no one Bruce has ever met and has a smile that could light up a dark room. Bruce is just a little too good at getting Clark to drop his defenses, and as they help one another, the connection deepens. Both have scars, some healed and some festering.
The two are hopeless and awful at communicating, but some things are worth the effort, right?

and so this is how one spell, gone wrong, leads to Superman's and Batman's memories being erased, which then leads to Clark and Bruce tumbling headfirst into a friends with benefits situation, which then spirals even more rapidly from there.
