“Go on, then, arrest me, Kim,” he says, smirking. He’s loose and large and looks down at you. And you think about it. You really do. Turning him around, slamming him against the wall, face-first. He’s larger than you, but he’s drunker, and he gets clumsy when he’s drunk. You’ve practiced, years and years of it. You can have the cuffs on him before he even realizes what’s happening.
You think, ah, fuck it, and then you’re on him, one hand on his shoulder, the other on his waist, spinning him around, shoving him, and he loses his footing on the curb, stumbles, and you get him under an arm, pick him up, and push him face first into the wall, reaching for your cuffs. Summary
Nix Gottlieb has been working for the RCM for thirty-nine years - since its very inception - and never has he seen a bigger bunch of idiots than the current cohort.
You have the twin fools McLaine and Torson, who are constantly in for the stupidest things, a real revolving door. Gottlieb suspects they like the company. Then, you have McCoy, who has never met a fight he wouldn’t pick. There is Minot, who tends to hide things until it’s nearly too late. There is Kitsuragi, who is the stubbornest man Gottlieb has ever met, and there is Vicquemare, who, when he is not actively trying to die, is not working very hard to prevent it. The consultant, Heidelstam, who is worth too much for how often they let him go out on calls and get stabbed. Even the horses which Gottlieb takes care of are exceptionally stupid this year.
And then, Gottlieb sighs, you have Du Bois.

The new you, the one that smokes like a chimney but doesn’t drink or shoot up, has been here before; 2 or maybe 3 months prior, riddled with insomnia, performing the usual ritual of walking the streets until something made sense or pulled you in. You’d stood in the early morning haze and felt something unknown and external tug at the centre of you, like an unpleasant hook through the bellybutton.
Standing here now, deeper inside the carcass of this long abandoned warehouse, swarmed at the edges by RCM patrolmen, the pull comes again, unusual and unsettling. You don’t have enough words to speak it through with your partner yet, and you hadn’t wanted to think about it before either; for once the desire to explore had been unceremoniously extinguished.
You weren’t so lucky this time.

In the beginning you dream about a shard of light, illuminating the path ahead of you. It wavers; sometimes it’s unbearably bright and warm, other times it struggles. It takes you longer than you would like to admit to realise that it always relates to him. When he has a good day, your dreams are steeped in gold. When he flirts along the edges of relapse, the light isn’t quite there, like a faltering lightbulb on the brink of burning out. He stumbles in the waking hours and you stumble in the dark.
Little by little he is becoming something in your rote routine, breaking it apart in a way you aren’t quite prepared for. You’re frustrated by it, by how quickly he had such a hold on you. You’ve never needed another soul in your life.
You’re beginning to need him.

Kim Kitsuragi never had a problem controlling his wolf. Harry was always calm and well behaved for him. He could do paperwork and Harry would be sitting still with just his tail wagging. In fact, he was often better behaved then, a modern miracle. “Lieutenant Kitsuragi,” people would ask, “how do you do it?”
And Kim would just raise an eyebrow and say “Discipline,” because they never saw Harry nudge his nose between Kim’s legs, looking up at him with large eyes, inviting him to grind down. Never saw how his ears would press against his head because he could smell when Kim was wet and he was trying desperately to ignore it. Because they never saw how often Harry would reach for Kim’s hand to hold.
Because they mistook Harry’s devotion for patience.
