It’s been three days now. Count them: three. He’s tried everything he’s ever known: fast and dirty, slow and teasing, even just a normal pace. Lightning doesn’t help, just leaves him kind of twitchy. Less or more oil doesn’t do the job. Not even toys are helping.
It’s been three fucking days and no matter what he does, Cid can’t come.

Never, in his wildest dreams, has he ever considered such a delectable feast laid out just for him. He waited a solid six hours after speaking to Clive to even make his way toward the solar, and at the time he allowed anyone and anything to give him pause. Just to add a little more time; to increase the suspense.
It works. Beautifully.

Clive looked out the door with a grimace. The rain seemed to have set in, at least for the night.
“I don’t think that’s going to let up until morning,” he informed Cid.
“A…aye,” Cid muttered, eyes drifting to the hearth. “No hope of l…lighting that unless we cannibalise the whole d…damned place.”
“Which would defeat the purpose,” Clive added, holding back a wince at Cid’s stuttering, leery of triggering one of Cid’s sarcastic tirades. He was a proud man, and that had never been in more evidence than in the last few months.
“Fuck,” Cid spat, hugging himself. “Regretting my insistence on g…getting out and about now. Not the company, mind, just the f…fucking weather.”

"Sometimes he would wake up violent, swinging punches and fighting until Cid managed to get the half awake Clive pinned to the wall or the bed to get through to him. Some nights he would just scream, heartbreaking sounds of sorrow ripped from his throat, and Cid would hush him with gentle words of forgiveness until Clive calmed.
At times when Cid was called away from the Hideaway, Clive would often end up barricaded in Cid’s solar, made to sleep on the couch as he wasn’t safe to be in the main barracks. Gav and Otto try to do their best to help, but it seems only Cid’s voice can get through to him. Only Cid could get through to his Clive."

Cloud looks up at him, eyes shiny still. He grabs Zack suddenly, by the collar, pulls him in close. Moments ago, Zack would not have begrudged this whatsoever, but now it doesn’t feel like Cloud is in the best headspace, and he’d rather, if Cloud is going to kiss him, that it be a less tearful event.
“Cloud?” he asks.
“I thought I could handle this. But you’re—” He shakes his head, then releases Zack so suddenly that Zack stumbles backward slightly, legs knocking into the couch next to them.
Zack frowns. “I’m what?”
Cloud pauses for a long moment. “You’re, well, you.”

“No. Why does that matter?”
“It’s the number one requirement to become a knight, you have to be of noble birth.”
“What? No it’s not.”
“Of course it is!”
“Not in Essetir. Not Odin’s land, or Alingeds. Mercia, Nemeth, Daobeth-”
“But it is in Camelot!” Arthur said, irritated. Merlin stared at him for several seconds.
“That actually explains a lot.”
“What is that supposed to mean?!”
“Nothing! Nothing!
“I’ll have you know that every man to become a knight of Camelot has to pass even more rigorous challenges! They all serve with honor!” Arthur was practically breathing her air at this point as she snorted.
“Are you joking? Some of the knights here spend half of their shift sleeping.” Merlin didn’t really want to get into the details of how she knew that.
“They do not-”
“I’ll make a bet with you,” Merlin paused, waiting for Arthur to calm down, “-if I can prove that half of your knights are absolutely worthless, you will give Lancelot a chance.”
"Fine." Arthur was going to regret this.

Summary
The year is 1901, and Merlin is a recent graduate of Camelot University's History Program. He lives in a crummy flat with his childhood best friend Gwen, and they both dream of doing something more with their lives.
When King Uther falls ill, Merlin sees his opportunity to earn his postgraduate degree, and change attitudes towards magic in Camelot. He makes a proposal to the king and his two children; fund Merlin's expedition to the Isle of the Blessed, and Merlin will bring back knowledge of great healing magic that might just save the king's life. While Princess Morgana and King Uther both reject his proposal, the king's bastard son Lord Arthur Pendragon has a different idea. Using his own money, he puts together a team. Merlin, the historian. Gwen, the cartographer. And Arthur's old friend from school, Gwaine, the muscle.
Together, along with Gwen's brother Elyan who they pick up along the way, they sail to the Isle of the Blessed in search of the Crystal Cave without King Uther any the wiser. Magic, adventure, and romance abound, and it's a race against the clock to find the cave before King Cenred!

Even stranger, Gwaine finds he doesn't want to shake Merlin.

At least anything except get married to a complete stranger when Queen Annis demands it. He meets a young man also trying to run away from his problems, and uses it as an excuse to get out of there too. There is more to this Merlin than meets the eye.

Summary
Merlin and Gwaine spend their days bopping around kingdoms, performing for the masses in exchange for petty coin. Their most popular show by far is when Merlin pretends to be Dragoon; an Oracle of the Old Religion. He is in no way a Seer. Sometimes they perform for room and board, but people often give them payment for his prophecies. When a tavern owner gives Merlin a ring for payment, everything changes.
Turns out the ring was haunted by the ghost of Queen Ygraine Pendragon. Merlin may have magic, but he was not prepared for this. Now Ygraine is threatening to haunt Merlin for the rest of his life if he doesn't travel to Camelot to protect her son Arthur.
He goes to Camelot, and it turns out that Arthur is a huge pain in the ass. But he's also kind and does his best for his people, and that has Merlin and Gwaine falling for him.
If only Merlin didn't have to contend with a genocidal king and political plot involving the Kingdom of Magic.

Summary
When it comes to Arthur, Gwaine does a lot of pretending for Merlin’s sake: pretending he doesn't know how Merlin feels about Arthur, pretending he doesn't know how Arthur feels in return, pretending he doesn't want to punch Arthur in the face and shout at the pair of them to stop being stupid and snog already.
(Gwaine's planning on being involved in the snogging too, he's not self-sacrificing enough to give Merlin up entirely, but he sort of thinks one of them has to make the first move.)
Or: Arthur is jealous and hungover, Gwaine is exasperated and really struggling to be sympathetic, and Merlin's heart is big enough to share...
