Summary
The doctor tilts her head to the only source of warmth in the cold, hospital room. “And who’s he?”
Buck’s eyes drift to Eddie, hungry for the sight of him. They fall upon the tense line of Eddie’s shoulders, the firm press of otherwise plump lips, watching like the very air in his lungs depend on Buck’s answer.
“That’s Eddie,” Buck answers, and the smile sneaks up on him. “Eddie Diaz. My partner.”
There. Relief washes through Eddie in a visible wave: his shoulders drop, features relaxing with the soft push of an exhale. Buck warms at the sight. Right answer.

A polysemy is a word with multiple, related meanings. The word partner, for example, can mean close friendship, a teammate, a co-parent. To someone else, it can also mean a lover.Bookmarked by SebtheTortoise

“Shh, no, don’t talk. I just got a response, finally. From the others. They’re coming, Eddie. You’re going to be okay, just stay awake.”
The elevator hadn’t moved yet. They were still trapped in no man’s land, still stuck too far for them to easily get to Eddie and save him. Buck could try to keep faith, but Eddie knew better, and so Eddie had to say it before he lost the chance.
“Buck, listen, I—”
“Eddie, don’t. No goodbyes, okay? Please?”
“I’m not going to die without saying this, so shut up and listen.” Eddie managed to rasp out.
Buck, to his credit, shut up and listened.

“Hey, Diaz? Take it from someone who’s been there — it’s not as scary as you think it’ll be.”
Eddie frowns. He glances at Buck, as if Buck has any idea what Tommy is talking about. “What’s not?”
“I like to think I’m uniquely positioned to say it’s worth it.”
Or, Buck is not in love with his best friend, and Eddie is super straight. For sure. Definitely.

“Everyone’s a little fluid, Eddie,” Zane says, and gone is that warm smile, those kind brown eyes. He looks hungry. He looks mad. He scoffs. “I mean, come on.”
Eddie shakes his head. “Sorry, I, uh— I think I should go.”
In his periphery, Jade’s stockinged foot tamps. “So soon?”
Eddie looks at her, then at Zane. She looks disappointed, but Zane—
Is holding a switchblade.

Summary
Christopher can’t do this. His hand is broken, his legs are going all shaky the way they do before they give out, and he’s barely in high school! He’s fifteen! He can’t even drive yet, probably won’t ever be able to, and he’s had to see his dad and Buck on the brink of death so many times since he was a kid that he’s starting to really get sick of it.
Christopher can’t do this. He can’t deliver a baby. Doesn’t it make any difference that he’s just fifteen?
or, A dead mall, a hostage situation, and a baby. This is not how Christopher planned on spending his last day of summer vacation.

“I heard you two were expanding your family! Another little one at Durand. We were so excited when we saw the enrollment paperwork.” She clasps her hands together. “Theo is an absolute joy. Let me show you what he’s been working on.”
Expanding your family.
Buck opens his mouth to redirect — it's a reflex, the correction sitting right there on his tongue. This isn’t the first time they’ve been mistaken for more than two totally platonic best friends who are both men and also raising children together.
It’s right there, polite and practiced: Oh, we’re not actually—
But suddenly Eddie’s hand is on his back. Not his shoulder this time, but lower. A few inches lower than two totally platonic best friends who are both men and also raising children together would justify.
Eddie’s palm presses flat against the base of Buck’s spine, fingers spread wide like he’s anchoring them both to the same spot.
“Thank you so much,” Eddie says. “We’re really proud of him.”
Or: The totally platonic act of raising not just one, but two kids with your straight best friend.

Chris scooted closer to get a better look at it. “Theo, how come Buck and Dad are holding hands?”
“What? We’re not -” He leaned in closer and, sure enough, Buck and Eddie’s respective blobs were connected by a single line.

"I don't think Eddie knows how to ride a horse."
As far as Buck is aware, his best friend is not harbouring secret equestrian tendencies.
"Yes, he does," Theo insists stubbornly, looking personally offended at Buck's disagreement. "He rode a horse in the desert."
Buck blinks.
"Chris told me."

Summary
“I don’t know what to do,” Buck says, hushed, like that mountain lion, who is no doubt keeping tabs on them from the shadows, can hear them from in here. “Flares aren’t a good idea, and I don’t— I never got around to getting a radio or—or a satellite phone—”
“Mm, Buck.”
“This is all my fault,” he says again. “All because I don’t like to fly.”
“Buck. Stop. Shut up.”
Buck huffs and runs his hands through his hair, tugging the curls into disrepair. “If it was me, you’d be the same way. Don’t act like you wouldn’t be.”
Well, that gets them both to shut up.
or, Buck and Eddie's trip home from Nashville doesn't go as planned.

Summary
Once everyone heads off to the bunks after dinner, Buck wastes no time in dragging one of the stools from the kitchen over to the Tetris cabinet, where he, too, settles in as if he were getting into bed.
The cabinet is new but the interface is a replica of the original, and when he boots the monitor up, Buck is faced with pixelated fireworks and a cartoon version of Saint Basil’s Cathedral. He nudges the red joystick and the main menu pops up. The left side of the screen reads YOUR GOAL IS TO FILL LINES!
Buck cracks his knuckles.

Summary
Theo plops himself onto the closed toilet seat, drowning in his Spider-Man robe while Eddie blow-dries his hair. He leans his face into Eddie’s stomach, humming to himself and fiddling with one of his bath toys that he’d rescued before being plucked from the water. The tub slowly drains, the bathroom is humid and nice-smelling, and there’s the weight of a toddler against him. Eddie isn’t just falling asleep, he can feel the stress of the day melting away.
He sighs. Theo tips his chin to look at him and sighs back, flaring his nostrils like they’re two tigers communicating in chuffs.
“I’m happy that you’re here, Eddie.”
“Yeah,” Eddie says. He aims the blow dryer down the back of Theo’s robe, making him giggle. “Me too, kiddo.”
or, Buck needs some help putting Theo to bed. Eddie has his back.

“...What I’m trying to say is, we’re best friends, you know? There’s nothing romantic about it. Just best friends.”
“Best friends who live together and raise two kids,” Eddie adds, perplexed.
“Yes!” Buck agrees, nodding, “Exactly.”
“Okay,” Eddie says, but it’s not, not at all. He’ll be demanding answers soon.
(Or, Eddie wakes up without remembering most of his life. He doesn’t freak out, really, he just needs someone to explain why is he not married to Buck.)
