    Lakan has no earthly idea what possessed him to come to the garden party, but some star smiled upon him indeed. It nearly breaks his heart just to see her: in formal garb she looks every inch her mother’s daughter, down to the cunning expression on her face. So he is not surprised when she announces the meal is poisoned, for he was already out of his chair when she decided to drink it.

    How would the story change if Lakan had attended the spring party and seen his daughter in the Rear Palace? How does his persistence change Maomao's view of herself, the world, and her place in it? A story in which Jinshi is not as subtle as he thinks he is, but that's okay because Maomao would rather drink poison than commit a single moment's self-reflection.
