After being captured and put on display in the foyer of a high-end hotel, the days blur past in a series of camera flashes and gawking faces. Trapped in an empty tank, filled to the brim with silent water, Varlen begins to fear he is losing his mind as he drifts aimlessly before a sea of watchful eyes. A life spent longing to meet human beings is replaced by a desperate need to get as far away from them as possible, but no one cares enough to help him. They all just want to stare. Smile. Take a photo. Tap the glass.
Then, he meets one of the good ones.

Most importantly, Dorian was only wearing Sky’s pin. Sky felt his throat constrict immediately, and his eyes were burning.
Usually, someone would wear only a single person’s pin or bracelet if they were completely committed to that person. The moving in together, getting engaged kind of committed. That Dorian would wear only Sky’s pin already, during their first date… Sky was absolutely going to have a freak-out over that later.
Or, in a world where people wear physical markers from every person they've ever dated, Sky Lavellan doesn't have a single marker. He doesn't feel great about this fact. It only gets worse when he meets Dorian Pavus on a night out, a man with more markers than Sky usually saw on anyone. As they keep meeting, of course Sky falls in love with a man he couldn't possibly hope to have. Great.

Summary
Dorian Pavus is an embittered PhD candidate and professor who has found the perfect study nook deep in the university library's basement. It is more private than his shared office, and more palatable than the supply closets he has, on at least several occasions, had to resort to for a bit of goddamned privacy. Most importantly, no one knows about it but him.
So when he rounds the corner into his nook one evening and finds an elven man has set up shop, Dorian is maybe not his most polite or professional. And it doesn't help that the other man is also a prick about it.
Cute, Dorian supposes. But a prick.
