It had been there, at the edge of the field watching a triumphant Musashino gather around Haruna when it all ended, that Abe had felt the first real seed of doubt bury itself in his mind. Unable to prevent it from taking root even as he shook Haruna’s hand and bowed. Feeling it fester as he practiced later than evening, running endlessly forward until his feet bled. Knowing that it was feeding off of his own guilt, his impassive front finally shattering while walking Mihashi home, powerless to do anything as Mihashi slowly retreated into himself.

“The sun’s not up, so we can’t be back yet...” Abe internally muses, as he is gently roused from the clutches of sleep.
He cracks an eye open and wearily takes inventory of his surroundings, still on the bus back from an away game that was quite far away. The game was honestly more tiring than challenging, due in part to the blistering summer heat, but the battery’s successful preparations for the match kept things well under control. To his left, across the aisle, Taijima dozes with his head resting on the opposite window, earbuds in and drooling slightly. Hanai and his other teammates snooze in the seats in front, all slouched against each other under the dimmed lights. Abe registers it must still be the middle of the night. They aren’t due to be home until early morning.
A gentle stirring to his right draws his attention, the culprit of his newfound awakeness.

Abe wakes up on an overnight bus ride home from an away game to Mihashi nervously fidgeting beside him. He decides to figure out what's up so they can both get some much needed rest.
