He only realised his mistake when Tony didn't say anything, turning away too quickly when Steve turned to look at him. It didn't take too much thought to connect the dots. Tony did think you only got one throw of the dice. Tony thought he, Steve, was that one. The One.In which they realise Tony loves Steve more than Steve loves him. But it's kind of hard to work through it when the Skrulls interfere, and scatter your sense of self to the multiverse.
