“Ilya,” Shane exasperates. “You worded that text message in the worst way possible. You gave me a heart attack. I’m almost glad you’re sick and not bailing for another reason.”
“I wouldn’t. I really wanted to come to your very expensive cottage on lake, but headache is too much and flying is probably no good for it,” Ilya says, and Shane can hear the sickness in his voice.
“How long have you felt sick?”
“I don’t know, got bad maybe two days ago?”

Then the driver leans over and punches the passenger on the side of his face, the camera tracking the way the passenger’s head whips to the side and smashes into the window, blood spraying from his mouth to coat the tempered glass. They’d already been warned in advance that the process would be long.
Even beyond the almost year-long road to getting approved, there was no guarantee that they’d have the opportunity to foster any time soon, let alone find a child who they’d bond with enough to comfortably start the adoption process.
So when Shane feels his phone vibrating underneath him as he and Ilya sit curled up in the corner of the couch on a Saturday night barely a fortnight after their official paperwork had come through, he doesn’t think much of it at first.
Not until he pulls the device from his pocket and sees their case worker’s name shining up at him, sitting up immediately, back straight and breaths picking up as Ilya lets out a small indignant whine.
