“May the Force be with you.”

The phrase almost carried more weight to it now than it had in the days of the Jedi. More pain, more meaning. More hope.

    _____

“You couldn't let go,” she said quietly, settling back against the wall. Like master, like student, she thought briefly, horribly. Wondered if she would be strangled by the same flaw, if she had inherited it like a curse, like a disease. “You couldn't let him go.”

    _____

But he would understand this, she thought. He was horrified by this galaxy, this history, even though that fact alone hadn't been enough to spark in him what she had needed. He wasn't a bad person. His world was just smaller than hers.

His choices had to be smaller, too, even when their repercussions were almost too large to comprehend.

    _____

“Letting go doesn't mean forever,” he said simply. Ahsoka finally let go of her master's robe as they both took hold of his hands and rose to stand beside him. “And accepting a loss doesn't mean not feeling it. It doesn't mean not fearing it.“

    _____

There was something inside of Anakin Skywalker, some voice that promised no one would ever love him the way he loved everyone else. It wasn't true, of course it wasn't, that was what made it all a tragedy, that he had been so loved but so blind to it, but it had strangled him nonetheless.

    Bookmarker's Notes

It’s this crypt of a place, Arthur thought bitterly. These ancient dead things. They’re not good for either of us. They pull us in the wrong direction. Backward, not forward. And forward is where we must go. Forward is where the fate of Albion lies. Where our fate lies.

    Summary

If Anakin knows one thing, it's that Obi-Wan Kenobi should not have died at the hands of Rako Hardeen. Grieving, furious, and lost, he goes to the Archives, only to stumble upon a holocron that sends him back far enough in time to save the love of his life.

Well, probably too far back in time because suddenly Obi-Wan is alive again, but he's a newly-Knighted Jedi with a nine-year old version of Anakin trailing him around like a sickly loth-kitten. While Anakin tries to find a way back to his original timeline without alerting anyone to the fact that he's actually from the future, he finds himself helping to raise himself (weird) and growing closer to this Obi-Wan (not weird at all). They have so much in common, after all.

At the very least, both of them have just watched their masters die.

    Bookmarker's Notes

He repeats the movement now, and then again when Obi-Wan doesn’t stir. Then again and again, until there’s nothing gentle left in the action at all and he’s raking his fingers through a dead man’s hair, hoping desperately for a reaction he used to fear.

    _____

He wants to find the words to say what he needs, but all of his words have deserted him. The last thing he’d said had been his master’s name. His mouth has forgotten how to say anything else, because anything other than Obi-Wan will mean that time has marched forward without his permission--without his master.

    _____

Before he can think about what he’s doing and who is or isn’t watching, he leans forward far enough to press a feather-light kiss to his master’s temple. “Obi-Wan,” he whispers, which, for him, has always meant love and hope and tragedy rolled into three syllables.

    _____

It goes without saying that if his master were here now, he would never, ever touch him with the intent on hurting him ever again, not even light-heartedly. Anakin knows now. He saw his master fall. There is no hurt that is light-hearted. Even the smallest bruise means something’s bleeding.

    _____

He wants to add, It's just that I don’t know how to leave him, but that’s another thing there’s no direct translation for. There is little room for love in Huttese, or the sort of aching, hopeless devotion that fills his body whenever he catches Obi-Wan’s eyes. Anakin knows. He’s been searching for the words for years, in Huttese and Basic and every language he’s picked up across the entire galaxy.

He’s never found the right ones, so he does what he always does: he keeps quiet.

    _____

It feels like the cruelest, kindest gift the Force has ever given anyone in the galaxy: time enough to notice Obi-Wan Kenobi’s freckles.

    _____

Actually, he imagines saying, I’m the grown version of your padawan, Obi-Wan. You raised me. I love you anyway. I try to be a good Jedi, abide by your teachings, but I love you anyway.

    And, most damning of all:

In eleven years, Master, I let you die.
    _____

But of course there’s no beard. Of course dreams don’t have to die when lovers do.

    _____

Anakin is so in love that when he thinks What have I done? he really means How will I live with what I have done?

… But as he leaves his quarters and starts down the hall towards Grandmaster Yoda’s rooms, the only thought that dogs his every step is: How will I live with what I have done when I may never get to do it again?

    _____

These are old beats, recycled. Stolen. Where Anakin comes from, these heartbeats have already happened. This heart has already stilled.

    _____

Anakin huffs out a breath. He’d forgive Obi-Wan, any version of Obi-Wan, for any number of atrocities. One day, he knows, he’s even going to forgive him for his death.

    _____

Suddenly, Anakin isn’t sure he knows what he’s capable of. He feels off-kilter. He feels dangerous. What do planets orbit when their sun implodes?

    Nothing. They burn too.

    Summary

Maverick doesn’t regret it when he takes the hit, when the last thing he hears before he ejects is Rooster screaming his name.

But then he wakes. Not to a vast, white snowfield behind enemy lines—but to an inverted cockpit of an F-14.

And to Goose, alive and well in the seat behind him.

Or; the time-travel fix-it in which TG:M Maverick wakes up at the start of TG (1986).

    Bookmarker's Notes

And here’s the deal, about getting older, about watching the years pass you by: you start to reflect on things. Like how every year, every new pilot Maverick meets looks more baby-faced than the last; like how a four-year old kid will shoot up like a beanstalk, faster than Maverick will ever be ready for; like how, in the liminal moments between pissing off yet another admiral and Ice saving his ass, Maverick will find himself once again standing at the threshold of the hangar overlooking the flight line, wondering if this, finally, is the last time—and be at a loss.

But up here now—in that very same sky, with his long-lost, oldest friend sitting behind him—Maverick thinks about something else, too: the cost of his ego.

    _____

“I am happy,” says Maverick, and it’s true. Happiness, sadness—no emotions are strictly exclusive. His heart beats a spreading garden of warmth beneath Carole’s concern, Goose’s kindness, and Bradley’s laughter. The three of them are together again, finally, bright and whole, blissfully unaware of how fragile that is. Maverick is a shadow in their wake. It’s all he needs.

    _____

Ten years. Maverick’s overthinking it. He has to be. Ice doesn’t just let things stand. Ice always tells it straight, no meandering, no bullshit. Ice goes after things, just like Maverick does, straightforward to the core. Ice would have said something.

    Ice would have said something.

But Maverick’s never said anything, either.

    _____

“It doesn’t matter,” says Maverick, and pulls away to kiss him one more time. Ice bites him, because of course Ice is a fucking biter. Maverick hadn’t known, and now he does.
