The ends of her hair tickle Max’s collarbones and she has to remind herself to breathe. Sometimes when you’ve been feeling sick for so long you stop noticing it at all. It’s the same thing with the effect Abby has on her; sometimes she thinks she’s grown used to it. Other times it hits her like a fever spike.
Abby says, in her ear: “You’re so quiet these days.”
Max rears back. The sick feeling is all throughout her body now.

Mira kept her soulmarks hidden, always. As a child, she liked to look at them, tracing the abstract lines with her eyes and finding new shapes and patterns. Every soulmark was unique, a code that could only truly be read by a soulmate. To other eyes, it shifted and swayed into a mass of outlines and colors, beautiful but undefined. To a soulmate, it was like a night sky; different constellations hidden within it, revealing themselves before your eyes.
When she moved to Seoul, she couldn’t see the stars anymore, not with all the lights. She had stopped looking at her marks years before, as soon as she had presented as an omega. Across the room, a cup clattered to the floor. Someone cursed. The crash sent Rumi’s shoulders rising nearly to her ears. Her hands shot out, grasping Zoey’s and Mira’s.
“Yellow,” she said, in the same tone one might use to remark on the weather.
The hand of Zoey she wasn’t holding appeared in the space between them, hovering an inch above Rumi’s sternum.
At Rumi’s nod, Zoey pressed her palm flat against her sweater.
“Fix or honest?” Zoey asked, eyes never leaving hers.
“Honest,” Rumi answered.
Zoey breathed in, exaggerated and easy to follow. “Four.” They inhaled. “Seven.” They held. “Eight.” They exhaled.
Without a word, Mira laid a warm palm between Rumi’s shoulder blades. Two hands anchoring her heart. The chaos of the café receded.
The broken ceramic was swept away. The clatter faded from her ears.
In Zoey’s eyes, Rumi’s reflection began to smile. Not a grin, not a beam. A slight, shy thing.
OR
Rumi has bad anxiety. Zoey and Mira know just how to take care of her. And anyone that becomes a problem.
