Summary
George Russell is one of America's most renowned pastry chefs. If only he could convince Clay to let him stop taking these wedding cake special orders. He hates wedding cakes. And he especially hates dealing with brides. He'll just handle this last one, for this Bertha Connolly, and then he'll get back to what he actually enjoys.
In which George is grumpy but besotted, Bertha is engaged to someone who definitely isn't him, and the rest of our cast of characters have to deal with all the headaches that ensue from those two central facts.

Summary
The world explodes. One moment, Bertha is hissing her disapproval in his face, trying to lambast him thoroughly without drawing any attention from their neighbors. The next, she’s on the ground, and so is he, and the street is full of screaming.
The gunman strikes again. It brings both hurt and healing.

"Name it." Bertha pressed herself up onto her toes to steal a kiss before leaning back in his arms again. "You know you need only to ask."

“Someone whom they saw fit to escort home from balls, and to accompany on walks around the block, and to ensure the overall wellbeing of when a certain someone’s tyrannical aunt was out on the warpath?” Bertha asked pointedly. She had shifted one hand to her chin by this point, her palm slipping over her mouth to mask what Larry rather horrifyingly suspected was another smile.
“Argh,” Larry offered inelegantly. “Perhaps.”
*In which Larry is not nearly so subtle as he thinks, and Bertha offers a bit of motherly advice*
