Summary
Well, this is just great, thought Simon. This is definitely where I wanted to be when I woke up this morning. It was a beautiful day, to be fair, the sun slanting through some really glorious fall-colored trees across a sparkling, crystal clear river. A native creature was making, if not bird song, at least some kind of mating call. There was a pleasant smell in the breeze, verdant and earthy and reminding him of late summers at his family home, back when he was a diligent student, studying on the back patio in order to fulfil his dream of being a doctor.
And here he was, pressing deep into a gash in Jayne’s leg to stop the bleeding, getting cursed thoroughly for his trouble.
Simon and Jayne get lost in the woods, literally and figuratively.

Simon heaved a sigh. And then there was Jayne. He wasn't exactly friends with the merc, but they had settled on "snarky but trusted acquaintances" whilst on the ship, which was, to be fair, the relationship he had with most people not his sister.Simon and Kaylee are over, and Jayne brings Simon a personal issue ("personal" in this case meaning "penis") that sparks something that Simon wishes he could understand. Jayne, meanwhile, is just happy to be of service ("of service" in this case meaning "having sex").
