Ford picked at his knuckles. It was as though there was a fine thread wrapped around his wrist that connected him, somehow, to the other half of the world. At times, he could forget it was there. Other times, like this one, it tightened so sharply that it cut off his circulation and made his hands go numb. Such a thing, of course, would be impossible, but that didn’t make it go away.
The clock hit 12:00.
