Stanley and The Narrator are now living outside the parable. After spending so much time in a place that doesn’t exactly follow typical real-world conventions, Stanley is forced to relearn not only how to be a functioning member of society, but also a plain, regular human.
With The Narrator beside him, Stanley knows he can overcome the hard luck and depression that plagued him in his life before the parable, but introducing The Narrator to the rules and expectations of human society comes with its own challenges.
How did this even happen, anyway?…

I suppose negative sanctions don’t work well enough with you, hm?” His tone is flat, annoyed, but in a cool, icy kind of way rather than a raging fire. “Fine then, I do believe I have an idea that we both may appreciate. Allow me to show you, if you would, and step through the left door.”
See, here’s the thing. As much as Stanley hates the Narrator calling him a brat, it’s simply in his nature to act out. He means, really, how is he meant to follow every word he says without complaint? He seriously can’t be expected to just listen because he was told to.
Stanley is anything but blindly obedient.
