The flight deck crew of Stratt’s Vat are professionals. They do not eavesdrop on their bosses instead of doing their jobs. They are professionals. They can eavesdrop on their bosses while doing their jobs. Multitasking is a very important skill to have.
Director Stratt and Dr. Grace are walking quickly across the flight deck, Carl easily keeping pace behind them. Willis and Mar share an amused look across the fuel line. Dr. Grace is flying to Australia within the hour to attend an Atrophage summit in Sydney. He is, of course, the keynote speaker. And he wants to take Carl.
“His name is on the paper! He was instrumental to the process! Pleeease pleasepleaseplease please let me take Carl.”

On Friday, Blonde Blazer found a new sucker to try (and fail) to wrangle the infamous Z-Team at SDN's Torrance location. On Friday, they all bet he'd be gone by Monday. On Monday, he showed up. On Tuesday, he showed up again. On Wednesday, they got to put a face to the voice.
He was the most basic and boring man he’d ever seen in his life. Average height, average brown hair cut into an average look, with big doe eyes and even bigger bags underneath them, a freckled face supported by a frame so thin and frail looking a soft breeze might knock him on his ass. All in all, he was entirely unremarkable in any and every way. Kind of cute, but in the same way a malnourished puppy covered in mud on the side of the road was cute.

The scars themselves ranged from long incisions that stretched down his chest and right down his belly like the sharp slice of gutted livestock.
Robert had an ‘X’ crossed over his heart like someone had taken a knife to it and unfolded the skin out like the petals of a flower to drive their fingers in between the gaps of his ribcage.
He was thinner than Sonar had initially guessed from looking at the way his uniform hung from his body. Rail thin and gangly in all the wrong places. He had muscle, of course, more than Sonar had expected to find, but no part of him looked healthy.
…He looked young.
“This isn’t a show, by the way,” the dispatcher ground out as he finally turned his head back to where Sonar was slack-jawed staring. “Didn’t your mother teach you not to stare?”
. . .
Months pass, and Sonar learns to map out the soft parts of Robert...How long will he have, though, before the consequences of Robert’s secrecy catch up to him?
Exhausted and with nowhere else to turn, will his walls finally come crumbling down?
