“Ilya, what are we gonna do?” Shane says.
Ilya finishes whatever he has been doing on his phone, and tosses it gently to the bed beside him. He crosses the room to Shane, stands in front of him, squeezes into his shoulders with his big hands, rubbing them like he means to warm them up.
“Looks like we will have a little vacation,” he says, with a big obnoxious grin.
Boston and Montreal are sent to Paris to play against each other in an exhibition series in January 2017. Ilya and Shane decide to stay in Paris for one more night. Just one more night, so they can talk. Maybe finally understand each other.
They aren't expecting a volcano to erupt in Iceland and close all the airspace in Europe, leaving them stranded there. Together.

Rose just scoffs silently and shakes her head. “Forget it, Shane. That’s Ilya Rozanov.” At Shane’s raised eyebrows and another, slightly stronger, shove with his elbow, Rose begrudgingly elaborates. “He’s the captain of the hockey team, pretty well-known on campus. And the one thing everyone knows is that the moment you want him, you've already lost.”
Shane frowns, leaning in a bit closer to his friend. “What does that even mean? Is he taken?” he questions, annoyed but still curious.
“Nah, he’s a weirdo,” Rose giggles, stifling the sounds behind her hand when a shush sounds from behind them. “Rozanov loves the chase. He’s got a thing for people who don’t want him, but the moment they show interest back and let him hit he gets bored and moves on. I swear he has some issues he needs to go to therapy for, ‘cause that’s just not normal.”

And then, shakily but no less firmly, Shane honest-to-god sticks out his hand for Ilya to shake. In the middle of a dim, sticky, tacky bar. In front of a display of cowboy-themed knick-knacks, like they’re at an important meeting.
And judging by the look on his face, he’s completely serious, face set and eyes earnest.
“Ah, formal.”
Shane jiggles his hand mid-air, waiting for Ilya to take it. He does, finding Shane’s palm to be warm and soft all over, save for a callous along the outside of his thumb that scratches pleasantly over Ilya’s hand.
“Ilya Rozanov,” He purrs, grinning wide when Shane flushes at the tone. “You are very young, Shane Hollander.”
“Not that young.”
“Younger than me.”
