But now he was alone, halfway up a hill no one knew he had decided to climb, and he had slipped so easily off the path and down a not-so-small embankment. It was fine, he just needed his head to stop spinning, and to be able to take a deep breath without his chest feeling like it was on fire, and he'd be fine.
He closed his eyes, the trees that were dancing around him were starting to make him feel sick, his stomach roiling like he was on that Euthanasia coaster he'd been reading about for no reason the other day, spinning in ever smaller circles until his body just shut down. But that wasn't going to happen here, because Buck was fine. He was fine. He just needed a few minutes.

Eddie stood, taking the phone from the girl’s hand as he gave her a polite smile. “Thank you so much.”
“Of course,” she told him. “Your sons are the cutest; I hope you can bring them back again with your partner soon.”
Eddie felt himself go through whatever the physical equivalent of a bluescreen was in that moment. He felt something hit him square in the chest as his cheeks began to tingle at the implication.

He takes deep steadying breaths. He closes his eyes, forcing his mind blank. He will not freak out. He focuses on the black of his lids.
Nope nope nope fuck nope.
He hadn’t. They didn’t. They wouldn’t. He didn’t.
Icy fear stiffening his limbs, he jerkily slides out from under Eddie’s arm. He eases it gently to the floor, watching raptly for signs of consciousness. Thankfully, there are none. Eddie’s deep even breaths help slow Buck’s own.
Just a little. He's still freaking out.
He races to the bathroom, shutting the door firmly behind him. He slumps against it, hoping to lock everything on the other side.
This is not happening.

"He does?" Buck asks, looking at Eddie curiously.
Eddie looks away, cheeks colouring. The two pendants under his shirt burn against his skin.
Theo nods enthusiastically. "He likes flowers and he likes you, so you should give him flowers Buck."
"Yeah Buck," Chris singsongs. "You should give him ~flowers~."

From behind his back, Chris reveals his old, ratty Superman logo shirt. It’s way too small for him now, but, for some reason, he’s never thrown it away.
“This shirt has superpowers,” he whispers to Theo. "It keeps all the bad dreams away. It doesn’t fit me anymore, but I don’t want all the superpowers to go to waste. Do you think maybe you could look after it for me?”
Theo nods emphatically. “Yes,” he whispers. He looks up at him, his tiny face sure and determined. “I can do it, Chris.”

Chris remembers, suddenly, the days after his mom died, the feeling of dread that lingered under his skin. The way it slowly bubbled up, over the years, until he couldn’t be this kid anymore, this kid who could look at the world and not see danger in every corner. He wishes that Theo will never be like that. He knows, living with a first responder, that the odds of him turning out any other way are against him.
“Hey, Theo,” he says suddenly, the words spilling from his lips without permission. “Do you think Buck is your dad?”
Christopher isn't sure how he feels about Theo, or what he means for him and Buck. When they're caught up in a disaster alone, he has plenty of time to figure it out.

In hindsight, Chimney should have seen this coming. He couldn't help but wonder if this was another reason Bobby took time off. Okay, so no one could have predicted that Bobby and Athena's attempt at a vacation would be the same time that Buck would be gone. With Buck gone, Eddie was on edge, and he was making it everyone's problem. No one wanted to work with an emotionally unstable Eddie when Buck wasn't around.
Eddie doesn't react well to Sam/Max appearance at the 118th.
