The words still echoed in his mind, striking again and again. Count Moriarty, imprisoned and broken. Albert. Attempted. Suicide.

    Summary

"Maybe it's pointless, but I hope you'll recognize flavor little by little," Sherlock said one evening, lifting a spoonful of sauce to his lips. He winced. "Too salty. You shouldn't eat this."

William chuckled softly, and true enough, Sherlock made himself the filter for every meal. And so their days went on. No miracle restored William's sense of taste. But Sherlock, in his stubborn way, filled that emptiness with something else. He refused to let William eat without flavor, even if what replaced it were only words meant for William.

    Summary

Here in Brooklyn, they were just two useful new investigators, their brilliance leveraged to solve difficult cases. The price for that usefulness was steep. They lived under new identities, but still carried their old burdens.

"You're going to make yourself sick." William murmured.

He pushed the cold coffee aside, then quietly went to the kitchen to pour Sherlock a glass of water. He also grabbed the thin blanket from the sofa.

"You can't keep doing this every night. And you have to let me help you."

He set the glass of water in front of Sherlock, then pulled a chair to sit beside him. He didn't try to take the pen from Sherlock's hand. Instead, he draped the blanket carefully over Sherlock's shoulders. Sherlock glanced at him, brows slightly raised, as if about to protest, but he didn't move the blanket away.
