Summary
Lan Wangji has done everything he can to strengthen his cultivation on his own. He realizes he can’t go further without a familiar so at the encouragement of his family and Clan, he attends a conference where he might find a creature that will compliment his training and become a true partner to him. Who he finds is someone he never thought he’d pick.
Wei Wuxian is in a cage, though he’s unwilling to bend or break. A proud Huli Jing, he has no master though his wild and untamed nature create a challenge for the greatest of cultivators, but he is not one who will be easily controlled. It isn’t until he sees golden eyes through the bars that hold him prisoner and hears a voice that soothes something in his soul that he thinks he might allow himself to succumb.
Will the two of them be able to work together and find balance, or will their differences make it difficult to succeed in them both getting what they want?

“I’ve been told you’re in need of a sorcerer,” the man said with no introduction as he crossed the room to gracefully sit on the couch opposite of Lan Zhan, one arm casually resting across the back of it.
Lan Zhan removed his gaze from the sorcerer’s long limbs to meet his eyes; eyes Lan Zhan was intrigued to find were like quicksilver: deep grey in color but with something liquid about them. They were more subtly unnatural than Lan Zhan’s own feline eyes, but unnatural all the same.

Summary
When Jin Zixuan came to Lan Wangji asking for help, he should have asked questions. He should have known that it wasn't going to be a simple trip into the countryside. But he didn't, so here he was stuck in a country village until Jin Zixuan could win back the heart of Jiang Yanli. A feat that might be easier if he didn't trip over his own two feet everytime he tried to talk to her. Lan Wangji supposed that was why Jin Zixuan brought himself and MianMian for support in his endvour. MianMian for her easy sociable nature, and Lan Wangji for his extraordinary empathic abilities as guide. It should have been an easy task, if it wasn't for the surprise return of the Jiang's ward Wei Wuxian. His constant chaparoning of Jiang Yanli was more akin to being guard dog, and Lan Wangji has to go head to head with him if he hopes to return to his library before the spring is over.
Except Wei Wuxian isn't what he seems, and the pull Lan Wangji feels for him is unlike anything he's ever felt. -

Wei Wuxian shrugged, his eyes trying to look anywhere but where he wanted them to. The corner of the door frame, the indent in the drywall, the single, dark freckle above Lan Wangji's starched collar… “Sure! Can't be anything too serious, can it? What is it?”
A single step forward filled Wei Wuxian's nose with fragrance. A warm, earthy cologne… or aftershave? The scent smelled both familiar and enticingly new. Warmth cupped his jaw. The electrical buzzing seemed to grow louder and louder, an angry wasps’ nest getting ready to swarm.
He met his eyes. They were so close… They were soft, warm… sad.
