Jules has approximately one person in her life who still believes in her. She's been lying to that person for months. A midnight breakdown in a fast-food drive-thru wasn't exactly the wake-up call she had planned. But then, she hadn't planned on Bridget either. Or the free fries, or the squishy apples, or crying in a booth at 12am while a stranger talked her through a panic attack like it was no big deal. It kind of was, though.

The kid mumbles around a mouthful of food, “Buck.”
“Just Buck?”
“Find my birth certificate and I can answer the rest of that question,” Buck says. Good God he is annoying.

Connie swiped the pan and began scooping globs of batter onto it. Once she finished, she popped the tray into the oven and set the timer. Jason was just untying his apron (Connie insisted anyone cooking in her presence wear one) when she snapped her own fingers.
“Hey! I’m talking to you! And I can get snippy too!”
Jason blinked. “Repeat that. I wasn’t listening.”
“I could tell.” Connie sighed and crossed her arms. “While the cookies bake, I thought I’d have a little chat with you.”
