The closer they become, the harder it is to tell whether Emet-Selch sees the soul before him, the Azem he once loved, or someone he has no intention of losing twice.

This fic is inspired by the beautiful poem "25 Lives" by Tongari.
In the twelve thousand years since the Sundering, Emet-Selch had always chased after the fragments of Azem. Never were they the same but always, he fell for over and over again. Lahabrea had called this obsession madness but to Emet-Selch, it was all he had.

She felt as though she was reaching out for something. Something she was on the edge of understanding. He looked at her with all of his mask gone, with his entire hand shown and yet she could not read the cards. He was telling her something and she was desperate to understand. But the time was up too quickly, he turned back into someone else, his expression a look of boredom. If only she could decipher this strangeness between them, the way her heart ached when she looked at him too closely.

His grip fell from her wrist - warm, ungloved hands coming to rest either side of her face, long fingers twining through her dark hair. His voice softened to a coo, more coercive and coaxing than it was kind.
“Yes, that’s it my dear—that’s it! One little word - one word and then I’ll know…”
She inhaled sharply, squeezing her eyes shut, and did not pull away, feet rooted to the tiled floor below.
“Come now, little echo,” his curved nose brushed against hers gently—sweet and menacing all at once. “Speak! Prove to me this one, small thing.”
After Emet Selch brings her friend back from the dead, the Warrior of Darkness is deeply moved, compelling her to stay behind a few moments as everyone else departs. Emet-Selch has been many things. Underneath all his identities and titles, he was first simply Hades before he took the title of his Convocation seat in Amaurot. Then, in order to usher forth the Seventh Umbral Calamity, Ascian Emet-Selch became the Garlean Solus Galvus. As a powerful sorcerer of eld, pretending to be mortal comes with its challenges - especially when his alias is recognized to be of the non-magical kind. After taking possession of Solus, he enrolls into the Garlean army. Quickly rising in the ranks, however, he becomes a Primus Ordinarius (commander of a cohort) by the age of twenty-two; then one day around this time, in the days just before war erupts, a strange woman is discovered lurking around his camp...

In a way, it's soothing to find these little differences. There are too many haunting similarities already, too many moments where this man feels like just the one she used to know. The one she loves. But unlike his future self, this Emet-Selch doesn't know her. And he had been right earlier when claiming she doesn't know him either.
