Shen Yi is still in the chair, the IV line drawing his blood out second by second. Du Cheng is ready for it now: he takes in every new detail methodically. The angle of the light coming in one unseen window. The minimum dimensions of the room. The traces of fine gravel on the concrete floor. Shen Yi's fingers flexing lightly, as if they can't be immobile.
He Rongyue looks at him in the rearview mirror, then quietly exits the car. All of the team know about Lan Yuxi and none of them have asked why Du Cheng would be the one receiving Shen Yi's call, or what he thinks he's supposed to say. Apparently it's so obvious there's no need to ask, and he doesn't know whether he's more embarrassed or grateful.

Summary
Jingyan knows what is happening to him. In the first hours, the sensation was familiar, the subtle burning under his skin distinct and memorable. He had asked his mother about the flower and the drug many years ago, omitting to mention that he had taken it himself. He had been a little alarmed by her description of the consequences if the pair who had taken it were unable to reunite — she had put it less euphemistically — but had decided to put it out of his mind. Whatever might happen over sixteen years, it couldn’t touch the bond between him and Xiao Shu.
He hadn’t even been sure the drug had had much effect. The rest of that season had been filled with triumphs of strength and with heated, stolen nights, but who could say whether that was the drug or mere suggestion working on their youth and strength? They were already invincible. They were already in love.

Then Zheng Bei asks if he could stay, and it brings him down hard. It doesn't burst the fantasy—worse, it pins it down, here to the fabric of reality, making the two touch. He doesn't know what to say. Zheng Bei's face is serious. What if he means it? What if he could stay? What if he could have this?
He doesn't answer. He can't possibly answer, can't probe the gulf between what he wants and what's possible. They walk on. Could he mean it? Could he like Gu Yiran that much, enough to build him into his life? And if he did, how much would Gu Yiran give up to have that?
On the way home they walk close, side by side. Swinging, Zheng Bei's knuckles brush his and send a tingling jolt through him. Once could be an accident, but it happens again, and again. The third time Gu Yiran flexes his fingers against Zheng Bei's, lets them catch and hold for a lingering few seconds before separating. He feels flushed and giddy, knowing Zheng Bei is seeking his touch.
