Summary
Laika is gone. The Egg took her, and the wasteland didn't even flinch.
Cliff is an old jackal with a bad history and a worse face — exiled from Where We Live years ago, returned too late to warn them of something they already knew. But Laika is dead, Puppy is alive, and he made a promise. So he stays.
What follows is the story of a man trying to learn how to be a father in a world that keeps asking him to be a weapon instead. Of a village that only knows the sides he shows. Of a little girl who lost her mother and now has to choose him. And of a promise that gets heavier with every chapter — because the world Cliff is trying to protect Puppy from has a way of showing up at the door whether you invite it in or not.
