“Did you ever go to Hershey?”
“What?” Eddie asked, thrown. “Why would I go to Hershey without you?” he asked, picking up a dish towel and drying off the plates in in the drying rack.
“When you were younger, I mean,” Buck clarified. “For your ballroom dancing.”
“I think I would—” Eddie paused on his way to grab a new plate, thinking. He met Buck’s face with an equally confused expression and said, “actually, now that you’re saying it . . . yeah.” He looked surprised by his own answer. “Yeah, Tara and I went our junior year. Damn, I can’t believe I forgot about that.”
“I think we met.”

In 2008, an unlikely interaction occurred; in 2025, Buck remembers.

Summary
Buck knew the universe wasn’t really a huge fan of him. But this? This was a new low.
The last two weeks of working with Eddie Diaz had been a special type of hell. Of course, while he’d been out of work nearly dying several times, Bobby had managed to replace him with the hottest, most competent probie that ever graduated the Academy. And of course, he hated Buck.
Which was good, because Buck hated him right back.
-----
In a world where everyone's timing is just a little off, Buck and Eddie take a few more missteps on the way to finding each other.

“Do I want to know what’s going on here?” Bobby asked.
“Normal stuff,” Buck shouted from where he was, back on the couch.
Eddie snorted down at his form, feeling fond and avoiding eye contact with Bobby, who must have stared down Chimney instead, because a second later he was fessing up.
“We’re making them fill out their HR relationship forms separately, and then we’re going to compare them, Newlywed Game-style.”
----
Buck and Eddie fill out the LAFD's Consensual Relationship Agreement paperwork, Chim and Hen are over them already, and Bobby is just trying to make lunch and commit as few HR violations as possible.

Oh, fuck him, did he almost sleep with a serial killer? Distantly, he thought, Hen and Chim are never going to let me live this down. And then he thought, I might not live at all.
-----
Buck is having a hard time dealing with Eddie's impending move to El Paso and resorts to some Buck 1.0-style coping mechanisms. Unfortunately for everybody, this backfires in spectacular fashion.
Especially for Eddie, who waited until now to realize he was in love with his best friend.
OR: Buck and Maddie get kidnapped. Eddie spirals.

“They just follow it around, copying it and helping it and bothering it so much that it's like, worn down into loving the duckling back and looking out for it.”
“So,” said Eddie, furrowing his brow. “In this scenario, you are—”
“A baby duckling, newly hatched into the world with no idea what’s going on.”
“And I am—”
“The first thing I saw when I opened my eyes.”
----
Eddie has no idea how to cope when a temporary case of amnesia causes the return of Buck 1.0. Buck has no clue why his future self hasn't made the moves on his hot best friend. It all goes pretty well, considering.

“I have no idea what’s going on.” He was embarrassed at the whiny note in his voice, but he couldn’t swallow it away. “I mean, the last thing I remember, I was telling my parents that I was leaving Texas. And then all of the sudden I wake up and it’s like—”
Like some stranger named Buck had infiltrated every corner of his life. That’s what it felt like.

“I need someone like you—someone who can keep up with him, and have his back, and maybe eventually even rein him in, should that be a thing that is humanly possible to do,” said Bobby, smiling warmly over the remaining half of his sandwich.
“Oh, I see,” said Eddie. And he did now. That’s what Bobby’s whole hard sell was about—it wasn’t personal, it was about Eddie being the top of this class. “I know the type. You see guys a lot like that in the military.”
“Oh, no,” said Bobby, “I didn’t mean to—well, what I mean is, I don’t think you have seen a lot of guys like Buck, to be honest. I don’t think there are a lot of people like him.”

“I need a photo of you,” Chris says.
“N-Now?” Buck looks down at himself: long gloves, meatball hands, denim apron. This is not exactly Instagram-worthy material. Beneath the apron, he’s wearing a stretched-out shirt of Eddie’s that still smells of his cologne at the collar. He holds up his hands, brows raised. “I’ve got meatballs on my hands.”
“No. It’s for school. I need a photo of you now.”
Oh. That’s fine. Buck’s got plenty of candid shots he can email Christopher’s way. Eddie’s no photographer, but he’s always been good at catching Buck at the right angle.
But then, shattering Buck’s delight in being part of Chris’s project, he continues: “And one when you were a kid.”
“Oh.” Dread injects itself into his veins—Buck barely has any photos from his childhood, half because his parents never cared enough to take them, but half because he doesn’t exactly like looking at them. He doesn’t look like himself in them. Long blonde hair, itchy dresses, hollow eyes and skin that never fit quite right.
“Um. What’s the project?”
Or: Buck comes out to Chris.

Summary
AU reboot of the entire SAO storyline, beginning from the premise that Kayaba Akihiko was obsessed with magic and Norse Mythology rather than swords and pure melee. As a result, he created the Death Game of Alfheim Online rather than the floating castle of Aincrad—a world in which player-killing is not a crime, and the nine player races are in competition with each other to reach the top of the World Tree. Multi-POV epic following the stories of multiple canon characters throughout the game.

“Holy shit!” shouts the EMT at his side. His partner on the other side of the gurney--the other side of the body bag--follows up with a well-deserved holy fuck and stumbles backward over her boots to sag against the back of the open ambulance.
“I’m fine, I’m fine, oh God, I’m sorry,” Guillermo babbles. His knees are trembling. He wriggles out of the body bag and hops to his feet, feeling like his legs are a cross between jello and underbaked macaroons, and he repeats his litany of apologies as he bounces from one foot to another to restore circulation.
Pain shoots through his joints from the roots of his toes. He ignores it, instead pivoting his head from side to side wildly seeking the detritus of his phone and groceries.
“Sir! Sir! You were--sir, please get back here! You were dead!”
“Not today, sorry!”

Every year, participating stations decorate one truck or engine in lights and garlands in order to compete for five hundred dollars to be donated to the charity of their choosing.
There are two stations out of that handful that take the job so seriously, that there are now signs posted around the grounds discouraging fighting. And stealing.
Station 118 and Station 6 are Christmas enemies.
Each crew member has their own beef, no one is a neutral party. Generally, it’s a station-wide hatred rather than on an individual basis, however, firefighters Buckley of Station 118 and Diaz of Station 6 are their own Christmas enemies.
They have a funny way of showing it.
Or, Buck and Eddie do not do the whole "enemies" thing very well.

The cards weren’t in his favor. “Husker, are you infatuated with that arachnid strumpet?”
“Yeah, yeah, I am,” he said, going for sarcasm and missing because of the weird panic that was edging into his laugh. “I’m thinkin’ a June wedding.”
“It’ll lead right into a July funeral, I suspect,” Alastor laughed, slapping his hand on the bar. “No wonder you’re so interested in releasing him from his contract. If Valentino heard there was someone who loved his prized star, why he would be absolutely livid.”
The cackle was unnecessary and Husk said as much, glowering. When that failed to shut him up, he waited until there was a lull and hissed, “Ya done?”
There was a pause, a ‘no,’ and then another chorus of maniacal laughter that sent Pentious, who had come into the parlor for something, slithering away with nothing more than an eep and an apology.
