Summary
It was the first day of classes, the first lunch period of the semester, and there was Ruby Rose, sitting in the vast cafeteria of Beacon Academy, attending the school she’d always dreamed of two years ahead of schedule, following in her mother’s footsteps as a Huntress-in-training, occupying the coveted position of leader of Team RWBY, and wishing miserably that her teammates were anyone other than Cardin Winchester and Dove Bronzewing.
When things go slightly wrong in the forest during initiation, Ruby is forced to deal with two teammates who are much less interested in working with her, and more interested in sabotaging any chance she has at a social life. Meanwhile, Blake and Weiss need to figure out how to work together before their slacker teammates walk all over them. And where's Yang...? Oh, floating up the longest river in Egypt without a paddle, huh.

One month to the Vytal Festival. Apparently, that meant that everyone needed extra training for sparring sessions. Glynda was pairing up teams, and having their members fight each other one-on-one. First up was team RWBY vs team CRDL, and who should the first match be but CRDL’s Russel Thrush vs team RWBY’s blond brawler, Yang Xiao-Long.

Yeah, Yang was confident in her own abilities, but not conceited. Strong, but not the strongest, fast, but not the fastest, smart but not the smartest… her edge was determination, her iron will- she could take whatever anyone threw at her, and as long as she held out there was her Semblance, waiting in the wings, there to dish all that damage back just as hard. She’d been out-muscled, out-run, and out-smarted, but never out-lasted.
