It’s nearly forty years on the dot since the launch of the Hail Mary that a transmission is received on its retired frequency. The world has been through hell and is on unsteady feet again, the Saving Grace treaty that ended World War Three and ushered in a new age is thirteen years old, and people are beginning to trust in hope.
And then, on one fine spring morning, the Deep Space Network detects a blip near the Kuiper belt. Two days later, the transmission arrives.
“My name is Astra Grace. I am the daughter of Ryland Grace and Olesya Ilyukhina. I come in peace with a small Eridian congregation to bury my parents on their home world. We are not armed. We come in peace.”

Every screen in the room blazed with the same breaking news feed. An alien voice had just asked for him by name on live television.
“Mr. Grace?” little Jamal whispered from the front row, eyes huge behind his glasses. “Is that really you they’re talking about? Like, you you?”
Ryland’s mouth opened, but nothing came out. His heart slammed against his ribs like it wanted to escape and hide under the desk with the class hamster. He was just Mr. Grace. The guy who drew cartoon planets on the board, who stayed late helping kids glue together messy dioramas of the solar system, who once spent an entire lunch period comforting a sobbing girl because her goldfish had “gone to the great fishbowl in the sky.” He graded spelling tests on vocabulary words like photosynthesis and asteroid. Aliens did not know his name. Aliens did not ask for science teachers.
The marker slipped from his fingers and clattered to the floor.

And she'd been working with Miss Tig, and her other therapists after Miss Tig left, about not entirely repressing her feelings and emotions, because it's not healthy to bottle things up and deny yourself the truth and et cetera, et cetera. Whatever, she knows the spiel.
So, she acknowledges it, but only to herself. Just so she won't blow up and overflow from denial.
And if that means her smiles get a bit tender, and her touches last a bit longer, sue her. She's trying her best. To be a good best friend.
