Joel had been training his whole life for this one day.
The war ended when he was three, a bloody history erased in the blink of an eye. But it came at a price. His hand was promised in marriage from that moment on, to the girl next in line for the Ocean Empire throne. He had never met her. And he would be getting married to her the same day he would meet her.
But Joel didn't want this. He didn't want any of it. He didn't want to meet this girl, or marry her, not this stuck up princess of a kingdom that killed thousands of Mezalean soldiers, ripped them from their chances of ever coming home.
So he left.
He left, he ditched his kingdom on the day he was to be wed.
Turns out, he wasn't the only one with that idea.

From the moment Apo could comprehend her grandmother's language, she loved fairy- tales.
Every night, she'd devour stories of dragons, princesses, warriors, fae, even tiny people that lived in the walls- all fighting for good, or peace, or love… but, although enjoying almost all stories, she hated one thing about them: the only time she saw rats in them were when they'd scuttle about in dark places, gnashing their teeth or getting tangled in something they shouldn't; they were, as the humans believed, villains.
Perhaps that's why she despised the Tale of Despereaux so immensely.
