"You didn't grow out your beard like I asked." InkHeart's voice was sorrowful, "I was so worried, you know. Years without you by my side, and then hearing about Mechaman's crash and retirement. Then learning you were working as a dispatcher." His voice is suddenly a lot closer, dipping into something carefully neutral, "You're so small, now, bluejay."
Something hitches in Robert's throat and he reminds himself to keep his eyes trained on either his coffee or the ground.

“What’s going on?” the dispatcher asked as the camera loaded onto his screen.
“There is no fire,” the fire hero explained, vaguely waving at the not burning building.
“No smoke either,” Golem added.
“Yeah, I see that.” Robert switched between cameras around the outside of the building. “There aren’t any cameras inside the warehouse,” he muttered, cycling through all of the cameras once again and checking that there aren’t any he can hack into. “Be careful when you go in there.”
Flambae scoffed. “We’re real heroes, Robbo. We can bust a couple, uh, thugs. You just sit in your chair and let us work,” he demanded, smile evident in his voice.
With a short laugh, Robert replied, “Okay, sounds good.”

Even after the Shroud Red Ring chaos, even with the Astral Pulse, even with the rebranded suit, Robert doesn’t want to sit in the cockpit anymore. Choosing to sit at a desk instead. Turns out, he reaches and saves more people that way all along.

The girl’s eyes snapped up, panicked. She spared a second to glance down at the man in front of her, her eyes racing up and then looked at Joel with the exact same type of terror, before emerging with something in her hands.
Joel watched, immediately suspecting a gun. “Whoa, now-”
The girl lifted her hands up, revealing an old knife. She smeared the tears on her cheeks away, trying to seem bigger than she was, but it didn’t work.
She was a terrified kid.
The urgency in Joel’s expression blinked. “Hey,” He repeated, his voice painted soft, though he didn’t let himself hear it. The girl just stared up at him with her knife, not realizing the tremble of her own grip or the violent shakes that tore through her entire, bare body. He just realized that now. Only her knees were covering her, along with the clearly torn pair of underclothes on her lower half. She cringed under his eyes. “It’s okay,” He tried. “I’m not gon’ hurt you.”
The girl didn’t even blink. She just stared up through her tears, terrified of him.
Fuck.
TLDR: Joel finds a traumatized Ellie on the side of the road. He's immediately soft. Meanwhile, she has to learn how to trust him.
