    They should never have understood each other.

    And yet...

    Aera Targaryen was born in the shadow of a throne and beneath the weight of a name that burns the tongues that speak it as much as it inspires fear. Invisible in the eyes of the realm, yet keenly aware of its cruelties, she learns early that greatness must be carried upright, even when the world despises you.

    Lyonel Baratheon, on the other hand, lives for noise, wine, and freedom. He laughs too loudly, speaks too quickly, and refuses to bend the knee any lower than necessary. He does not like dragons, least of all those who believe themselves above men.

    In the tents of tournaments, between murmured provocations and defiant glances, their paths cross, clash... and then linger.

    Or, the Game goes on after the Rebellions. The Starks still won't play, but everyone is playing the Game all around them, and Jon Sand has somehow become an important piece. Robert Baratheon, unknowingly, is the Targaryens' greatest asset.

    It’s a small enough thing, the Baratheon stag engraved into the lid. It had perhaps been locked once, but the salty sea air of Storm’s End softens most wood after enough years, and the latch tears clean out when he gives it a good pull. Old too, then. Inside is another bundle of parchment, neatly folded and tied with fraying twine.

    More damned papers, he thinks for a disappointed moment, nearly shutting it again- what a waste this whole venture had been. But these do not look like more records. There is something personal in how they have been handled and hidden away, and Renly begins picking at the twine with curious fingers. When it falls away, he unfolds the first sheet, and finds a letter.

    Milord Lyonel, it begins.

    [Renly Baratheon, young and full of confusing feelings, discovers that he may not be as alone as he believes.]

    When asked in the past by curious sons of what happens when a person dies, Baelor Targaryen sat them down and patiently explained that the Faith of the Seven teaches them that the righteous are blessed in the Seven Heavens as long as they lead a virtuous life and repent for any sin committed. He had never questioned it himself.

    Falling to a blow by his brother's mace while defending what was right, even against his own family, Baelor should have been feasting in the Father's golden hall and waiting until the moment he would be reunited with his family. That did not happen.

    Instead, the former Prince of Dragonstone woke up far from home and everyone he knew, though the faces he found himself among were not unfamiliar to him. But what does it mean to find yourself in the pages of your family's own history books?
