She must place each domino herself, and there the metaphor becomes tastelessly vivid in her mind. She sees herself, trembling-fingered, pseudo-geriatric, placing a new little purple slab next to a teetering array of dimmer, duller little purple slabs. (Seventeen so far. Not yet a tower. Barely a fence.) And if she thinks anything as trite as “I don’t want to fuck it up,” she will have to order a drink to show herself who’s boss.
She’s got help, though. She never thought she’d have help with this; she never thought she’d seriously try. She can’t think about trying. She can think about Dave.

Life reached for the opportunity. Whatever the clown was, he shrugged and ignored reality real hard in a way he'd grown all too used to and smiled and let what she was flow into him, because Jane ... she was raging.
