Punching your roommate is not a very smart idea. Starting a friends with benefits relationship with said roommate is an even worse one. Setting up a string of rules to keep it purely physical and make sure you don’t catch feeling but catching them anyways is certainly the stupidest thing you could do in that situation.
Luckily for Neil, he never claimed to be smart.

Waste had been a concept his mother had hated when they’d been on the run together. Five million dollars had probably seemed like a lot to most people but Mary had taken them on the run from a man with far-reaching hands and a burning desire to see them dead at his hands.
Fake passports cost money. Hair dye and coloured contacts and items that changed the shapes of their faces just enough to trick security cameras? Cost money. Simply surviving had quickly made their fortune dwindle down to the dregs before Seattle.
Before that though, Neil had learned how to repair holes in his clothes before he’d mastered fractions, had learned how to stretch out everything he owned until there was no other choice but to toss it. Even his contacts had gone through more than their recommended usage when Neil had been unable to get a new pair.
But food? Wasting food was unforgivable.

Opening the door felt like the rush of every bad decision Neena had ever made. She knew she thrived on adrenaline; she loved to make risky plays on the field and craved the thrill of a getaway in a car that could barely hold her.
Drew Minyard felt like every one of those feelings to her. An apple with the metallic tang of the knife used to cut it. Like waving your hand over the open flame of a candle, never quite feeling the burn.
Drew was leaning against the door frame, the bulges of her muscled arms on full display from the sleeveless tank she was still wearing. Her hair was mussed but mostly dry and there was a hint of minty freshness in the air around her- like Drew had popped a piece of gum into her mouth moments before Neena had opened the door.
She blew a tiny bubble and asked, "Tired?"
Neena shook her head and stepped back, sleeping the last thing on her mind. "Not in the slightest, come in."
