“It’s somewhat related to another theory, the Rare Earth theory.” Shun continued, “The idea that the conditions on Earth that allowed for life to evolve is extremely rare. There are so many things required for life to get started, the Rare Earth theory suggests that Earth got extraordinarily lucky and just happened to develop the right conditions for life to evolve, and that improbability is why we haven’t found anyone else yet.”
“Another theory you now know isn’t true.” Baron smiled, “You humans really wanna think you’re unique, huh?”
“What species doesn’t?” Shun challenged mildly, resting his cheek on Baron’s hair, “Everyone wants to think that they’re special. My people just haven’t found any evidence to the contrary yet.”

“Oh!” Rocky exclaimed, “Like Grace!”
“Wha- Excuse me?” Grace startled.
“Grace have freezing body temperature.” Rocky said matter-of-factly, “Grace beautiful and lonely and fragile. Grace skin organ flimsy and light like snow. Grace could kill Rocky with freezing touch or kiss.”
And Rocky would let him, thank him even, for his touch like burning ice. So-Cold-It-Burns with oxygenated flames for lips and long fingers like burrowing needles of ice, but it would be touch.

“What is a ‘field trip’?”
The unexpected question makes me stop in my tracks. I stumble over my own two feet and almost bite my own tongue which is a new low, even for me. If I keep going like this I am never going to beat the clumsy human allegations. At least Rocky is not here. If he’d witnessed my latest embarrassing blunder he would have found ways to tease me about it for a week straight. It’s unfortunate that my class has to see me like this but they are a lot more forgiving and understanding of their ungraceful teacher than my best friend. A fact I like to hold over his head from time to time.
Not that he cares. He maintains that he’s earned the right to mock me as much as he likes after having to watch me stumble and fall repeatedly over the same threshold for four years.
And maybe he’s not wrong.
Don’t ever tell him I said that.

There is no way Grace can take the pebbles on a field trip. At least not without help.

All life on Earth evolved, in the beginning, from aquatic life forms. To many, the call to return to the ocean is instinctual, a feeling deep in their bones that goes far beyond any rational reasoning. To float amongst the waves, to kick and splash until it feels as though you were always part of the water, is to be entirely free.
