Sleep won’t come, but Paschal says pretending to sleep is almost as good, so Laurent sets a timer and spends twenty minutes with his eyes closed, on his back on top of the covers, hands folded over his chest like a corpse. Yesterday was Labor Day; he took today off too, to supervise the furniture delivery and finish painting the bathroom and slip the plastic cover onto Nicaise’s bed, redoing his sheets afterwards. He still has his books and some kitchen things to unpack, and some pictures to hang, but otherwise the apartment is thoroughly habitable.
When the timer goes off the texts are still there.

Summary
Laurent didn’t say anything. His throat was throbbing, and the back of his head hurt from where it had struck the wall. To ally with Damianos of Akielos was unthinkable; but the only other option was to kill him, and it was becoming increasingly clear that he would not be able to do that tonight.
“It’s getting dark,” Damianos noted, glancing at the sky. Apparently his silence had been taken for assent. “I will accompany you to your camp.”
Oh, that was too much. “You are not invited to my camp,” Laurent snarled.
Damianos looked at him for a long moment, before the corner of his mouth quirked up once more, the beginnings of an infuriating, arrogant grin. “And how will you stop me, sweetheart?” he asked.

“Is that where you’re going to leave my body?” Laurent asked, pointing at the water. His uncharacteristic silence had not prevented him from making jokes like that all week.
“I’d never leave your body that close to the road,” Damen said.
“Oh, of course,” Laurent agreed.
