the beast isn't something that exists on this plane, as far as meng yao knows. every time it -- he -- moves, reality seems to shimmer around it, making his head hurt from trying too hard to focus. at times he thinks it resembles the cliff-wolves of qinghe or the fabled elephants of tianzhu; at others it seems ethereal, like wisps of resentful energy, or like an oily sheen upon the air itself. he does not know how many limbs the beast has, and every time he tries to take count the number seems to change. it is the same with the number of eyes and mouths, the dark caverns filled with far too many teeth and tongues.
when meng yao says he will do anything to earn his place at jinlintai, his father puts that resolve to the test.
