    Summary

Keith is sick, and someone comes to check in on him.

He's just about to try to smother himself again when his door whooshes open. His eyes dart automatically towards the door, and he squints at the figure. It's tall and skinny and dark, which leaves only one person it could be. Lance.

His heart does a tiny little kick in his chest, and he has to redouble his efforts not to cover his face again. Of all of the people who would come to check on him, it would be Lance.

he doesn't know if they're the kind of friends where he can ask them what he should be doing when he's dying. He doesn't even know if he could get up to ask them.

He's just going to lay here until he either succumbs to his inevitable death or magically gets better. There's no other options.

    ***

Keith hazily thinks he might be the most beautiful person in the universe. He mentally shakes himself, realizing his foggy head is extending into terrible metaphors.

"He suggested we try this first, just a tablespoon. This should help with the lingering fever, and hopefully with your headache."

"How did you know I had a headache?" Keith asks, surprised.

"You get a little wrinkle," Lance says. "Right here." He reaches out and touches the space between Keith's eyes, tracing lightly.

    Summary

“He called me my Naruto,” he said.

“Did he? In the one I read, he signed off with “Ardently yours”.”

(Or, the day after his birthday, Naruto receives a burlap sack of hundreds of love letters that he was definitely not meant to read. Sasuke is either dead or dying—and he’s nowhere to be found. Not to worry, Naruto will find him. Again.)

    Bookmarker's Notes

Naruto winced. “He’s not dead,” he protested, albeit weakly. “I’d know if he were dead.”

The day Sasuke died, a shockwave would ripple out around the world. He knew he’d feel the loss of him like a spear through the heart, even if they were hundreds, thousands of miles apart. He’d be bereft, alone, he’d feel the void like another missing limb. He’d have no choice but to follow helplessly.

    ***

“Sasuke’s a flying bird. A wandering spirit. A balloon, y’know, on the, the rising wind. And I’m tied right down to the earth.”

Florian pursed his lips. “Being grounded to a place isn’t such a terrible thing. Is to be loved by you really such a chore?”

Naruto considered this for a while. The stories Jiraiya had written about romance described love as such a fleeting, fragile thing, like the gentlest brush of butterfly wings. Naruto loved like a two-ton anvil. Heavy and dense, solid and unchanging; his love was an iron ball he threw at people hard enough to crack them open.

“I guess so,” Naruto said, voice small.

Florian mulled this over for a while. His cigarette had long since burned down to the filter. “Love is heavy, yes. Sometimes it's burdensome. But it’s always easier to carry someone else’s. Tell me—could Sasuke’s love be too much for you to bear?”

Since Sasuke’s hatred had weighed nothing at all, Naruto could imagine the ease with which he’d carry his love. “I doubt it,” he admitted.

    ***

“Anything that is within my power, I’ll make it better. I’d build a Konoha we can all love. One that maybe you could forgive, and make a home in. Because it has changed. And if it hasn’t changed enough, I’ll make it change more.” As much as Sasuke moved him to creation; he also moved him to destruction. When rebuilding Konoha he’d insisted they tear down everything—any surviving buildings, their political system, old laws and rulers—to start again like a blank slate. How many times did you have the chance for something so complete as the fresh start they’d been given?

To rebuild Konoha, Naruto had destroyed it once again. There were no old buildings, no historical artefacts. Not a single tree or a stone was where it once stood. The War Memorial, the Uchiha plaque, all of it bright, shiny and new, remembering the past but always looking to the future. The surety that he’d do it again, merciless and without flinching, kept the creeping shadows of Konoha’s vast underbelly at bay.

    My Polaris,

The northernmost point of the known world lies far further than the cartographers of the Land of Lightning would have you believe. It is uninhabitable, inhospitable land. Yet migratory beasts and flora thrive here in the summer, for then the sun never sets. Constantly are these verdant, green-clad fields bathed in rays of syrup and honey, stretching out as far as the eye can see.

The locals call the phenomenon the Nightless Night. They worship it like a god. But as I looked upon the sun long after it should have rested, unable to sink beneath the horizon and kiss the moon, I was struck by the thought that it must be lonely.

At the end of all things, I wished I was with you.

    Forever in my thoughts,
    Uchiha Sasuke

    Summary

It was absolutely the most devastating thing to ever happen to him in his six years of life. He knew Uchiha were supposed to love too deeply, but this was ridiculous! He was just a kid, for god's sake! He didn't want to be in love!

Or: Sasuke gets a crush and it messes with best laid plans.

    Bookmarker's Notes

“It’s always been up to you.”

It was a bittersweet scold, but the kind of scold that betrayed that his mother had discovered a new level of disappointment in someone she loved, but truly thought was better than this. It was like she thought her scold would be useless, a beloved child too stubborn to heed her words, but she loved them enough to scold anyways.

Sasuke didn’t understand any of it, felt just as underwater as he’d been yesterday; made small and insignificant. He was aware enough to understand the layer of significance to his parents words, to feel the room react, but he didn’t dare question what was going on. What would happen in this room would determine his future. All he could truly do was cling to Naruto, hold on as tight as he could and pray whatever was sea of conflict they’d been dumped in wouldn’t swallow them down.

    Summary

The only reason Sasuke keeps coming back to Konoha is because of that mattress. The bed is his only respite. And perhaps the dumbass who owns said bed might be worth it, too.

Or, another canon divergence 699 that showers Sasuke with too much (deserved) love and attention that we all need for these unprecedented times.

Title means "Bonded Light". It'll make sense when you're about 100K in.

    Bookmarker's Notes

“I like when you’re here,” he said, open. Honest. This was somehow worse than Kakashi’s brand of premeditated guilt. This was truer, more genuine. Naruto didn’t mean to use it as a weapon; this was how he really felt. It sort of made Sasuke feel sick.

    ***

He longed for it. His family. The people he loved. The pain wrenched at his chest with it, numbing everything else. It was easier to focus on the pain than to try to break it. What he would give to never have to feel this again. If he didn’t have anyone else in his life to love, he would be free of it.

There it was again: his thoughts circling back as they always did. Kill Naruto. Don’t be at risk of this pain ever again. But he couldn’t kill Naruto, and it had nothing to do with Naruto’s strength. It never did; he had come to realize that a year ago. He wondered how Naruto did it; how he managed to make the love he had for everyone into his strength rather than the weakness Sasuke had always felt from it. Naruto cared, and Naruto protected. It must have been something about the difference in their traumas. Sasuke couldn’t pinpoint it.

    ***

She was a child. Sasuke couldn’t imagine her to be older than thirteen, nor her teammates. She was caught up in the glory of the contest, of being the strongest killer she possibly could be. Lightning, weapons, genjutsu, and a desire to prove themself. It pained him to see the connections. They were children. Everyone in this exam was a child. And so, he contended, was he. With the eyes of his dead brother, he could see too much.

    ***

Even now, Sasuke’s love for his clan and for his brother is what motivated his actions.

His eyes were developed in love. For centuries, the Uchiha manifested their love into shields, always protecting one another. It was love that armored the Susanoo.

And it was love that could pierce it.

    ***

His mother’s hands had always been so gentle in his youth, but Naruto’s were rougher; he needed them to be, now. The stiffness he had accumulated within the past decade without his mother’s gentleness required it.

    ***

“You still wouldn’t choose my life over anyone else’s, though,” he struggled to not marvel at the fact. “You would save us all.”

“Well, everyone’s life is important,” Naruto agreed, and Sasuke opened his eyes at the wrong moment. “Especially yours, though.”

Naruto was staring at him so determinedly. The snake in his stomach didn’t feel so out of place anymore.

    ***

“But the Will of Fire is about the desire for us all to protect one another. It’s about love being the key to peace.”

    “Is it?” Sasuke challenged.

“Yeah,” Naruto attested. “It’s always how I’ve lived.”

Speaking from his chest, Sasuke countered, “Love is the easiest thing to manipulate.”

“I know.” He said it firmly, and one glance down at his solid gaze confirmed that they were both thinking of the same thing. Sasuke’s life was nothing but evidence of it. So was Itachi’s.

    ***

They trade their own sleep, their health and sanity for… what? The betterment of their country? Fight for their village for justice against other countries, so that the other countries could claim their own fighting just as righteous? Sasuke fought for himself because he had to. There was no other option ever presented to him in this world of blood and battle. He was left with nightmares, and so was Naruto.

Sasuke could circle with such thoughts for hours. The more he thought about it the angrier he got, the bruises on his legs from where Naruto had unconsciously kneed him stinging. Naruto knew this pain. Naruto saw it in others long before Sasuke ever did. Naruto had already brought those feuding countries into alliance, had always been good at bringing everyone together. Naruto was going to be Hokage.

    oh my god

for a 200k fic i 100% expected the relationship between sasuke and naruto to be full of pining and misunderstandings and angst and pain when it turns out, it's not- it's really really not; of course there's angst but i can't stress enough how fucking sweet this is- the fucking love they share- the way they understand each other without words, without having the narrator to say "i understood him without any words", the way they are so balanced in every day life and with each other's struggles GOD they don't have to say anything they just KNOW bcs they know each other and to be known is to be loved or whatever

other writers would tell you that this couple are soulmates, this work will show you why

and sasuke's character. dude. dawg. he's so relatable with all of these emotions going on all of the fucking time dude. going from up to down to a storm and to muck inside your head in a matter of a second

oh fuck me. ninth read and i'm still finding new stuff. so good

    that epilogue is glorious btw

    Summary

Zuko scoffed. “As always, I am the author of my own unhappiness.”

Sokka hummed. “Years ago, when it was just us travelling together, we came across this fortune teller. I didn’t believe any of that mumbo-jumbo. But then she said that my life would be full of struggle and anguish, most of it self-inflicted.”

It suited Zuko’s life extraordinarily well, he felt. “Sometimes, I feel like I’m the only person in the Fire Nation who has a vision of what it takes for this country to get better.”

Sokka turned to face him, but Zuko looked resolutely forwards. “That can’t be true.”

Zuko turns twenty-five. In spite of his best efforts, the Fire Nation seems to lurch from crisis to crisis. The firebenders have lost their flame, and the situation with the former colonies is only worsening. All the while, he's ill, lonely, and consumed by work.

And on the other side of the country, Sokka has just moved in with one Master Piandao.
