In the three years since the last time John swiped opiates from the drug lockup for personal use, not much has changed.
He knows this in advance, of course. But part of him is almost surprised at how easy it is. How no one gives him a second glance as he slips the morphine into his pocket. Mark Greene isn’t here anymore, looking over his shoulder. So many people aren’t here anymore. Not dead, like Mark. Just… gone. Following their careers, their families, leaving County General behind. Building rich lives outside the hospital walls. Doug. Carol. Jeanie. Anna. Benton.
He's almost surprised no one stops him. Almost. Right now, though, he's not feeling much of anything at all.

Summary
Carter follows behind him, feigning quiet composure, but doing a poor job at concealing the whirlwind of anxiety Peter knows is rippling just beneath the surface. Once again, he’s reminded of a much younger version of the man before him, one who bled the need for his mentor’s approval after each and every transgression, driven frantic by the need to make up, to convince Peter that he had a handle on things.
Peter hates to see a flicker of that returning now, under circumstances that pose no easy fix.
