Não era segredo que Vox não gostava de canibais. Ele os odiava muito, principalmente depois do último incidente com um “amigo”, se é que poderia chamar assim. Então por que diabos tem um canibal na sua sala de estar? E pior ainda: uma criança canibal?
Do outro lado da sala, uma pequena demônia de vestido rosa sujo de terra e algo vermelho num dos lacinhos adoráveis, se pendurava no braço do sofá caríssimo. Os dentinhos afiados dela estavam cravados no estofado azul como se fosse um pedaço de carne pronta para saborear.
A criança não tirou os dentes do sofá, mas virou seus grandes olhos dourados na direção de Vox. Mel o encarou por um tempo, com uma expressão que misturava dúvida e maldade. Como se a cria de Satanás estivesse ponderando se ia ouvi-lo ou não. Então, ela simplesmente continuou mordendo, ainda olhando-o.
— O que foi que eu acabei de falar? — Vox bufou, mais para si mesmo do que para o pequeno furacão que não o escutava.

Olive pôde reconhecer instantaneamente o ar de poder que emanava dele, mesmo à distância; Lúcifer Morningstar não era exatamente alguém que poderia passar despercebido, mesmo que quisesse.
Ele estava encostado casualmente contra a balaustrada de um terraço, provavelmente achando que ela não o perceberia, já que se escondia sob as trevas de seu próprio domínio.
Sua figura não demonstrava qualquer emoção visível, mas algo na maneira como observava enquanto ela tocava sugeria que a música o atingia de uma forma que não poderia simplesmente ignorar. Talvez, pensou Olive, mesmo o Governante esquecido de todo esse Inferno pudesse encontrar um eco de algo perdido em seu próprio ser nas notas que ressoavam no ar noturno.
