If Siegfried could be proud of nothing else, through whatever mishaps and misfires he might have plodded right into while bringing up Tristan- never, not even once, ever- did he lay a hand on the young boy.
But with words like these, who needs a rod?
His little brother reels back, sharp, as if he'd just caught a nasty palm clean across the cheek.
"Oh," Tristan says. Then, quieter, "Oh. I see."
And, worst of all,
"I'm sorry."

"I'm Phoenix Wright!" He says, smiling bright in hopes to make up for being so informal. He goes to stand, but his feet snag around the pant legs and he falls flat on his face—limbs splayed out around him like a starfish.
He hears the older ones gasp and soon he is carefully being lifted to his feet.

"I know," says the older woman. "It's him."
The girl in the hat looks stricken.

She’s been eyeing Mr Farnon over Charlotte’s shoulder as he wanders closer, having managed to extract himself from Mr Dobson’s questioning. He looks so handsome in his Sunday best, well put-together, his pocket square just so. Audrey can’t help but be proud — of his well-pressed suit, of course.
He doesn’t comment on finding Audrey in the middle of the gravestones, just holds his arm out for her. “Shall we?”
They share a private little smile as she hooks her arm with his, the rest of the congregation fading into the background, his eyes twinkling in that way she’s noticed they do when she catches his gaze lingering on her.
They walk down the path arm in arm, only separating so he can open the Tapsel gate for her to pass through first — once their arms are linked again, she tries to go right, towards home, but he pulls to the left.
She looks over at him, raising an eyebrow.
“I thought it would be nice to go for a little walk,” he says.
(It's Audrey's birthday and Siegfried has a surprise in store — but, as usual, it doesn't go quite according to plan.)

He was ranting about some farmer he’d been out to see, he was going on and on about how the farmer had been incompetent and wasted his time. He’d then reached past Audrey to get the whiskey, but she didn’t see what he was doing, he moved so quickly, and for a moment she was suddenly back in the marriage she’d run away from.
She flinched. And everything stopped.
Siegfried stood still, his hands dropping to his side, his words failing him for a moment.
She looked at him, realising what she’d done.
‘Mrs Hall, I wasn’t going to…’ he couldn’t finish his sentence, his eyes meeting hers, as though he was putting it all together in his head. And she couldn't bear it.

Siegfried ran to send a telegram to Evelyn, who was away at secretarial school. BABY BROTHER BORN STOP EVERYONE HEALTHY STOP HE IS CALLED TRISTAN STOP. Why on earth had he sent a telegram to a woman who wasn’t yet his wife, announcing the birth of a child that wasn’t his? What an enormous waste of money.
The first eighteen years of Siegfried and Tristan trying, somehow, to be brothers.
