The Russian pet name set a firework off inside Shane's mind as he heard it cooed from behind him. The intonation was just as he remembered, but the voice was much deeper.He turned and felt himself short circuit. It took every ounce of willpower to not let his jaw drop cartoonishly to the floor. Shane would recognize his individual features anywhere, even after 5 years. But it was as if someone had snapped their fingers and the smug, silly Russian boy who had been attached to Shane's hip for 3 summers was transformed into some sort of fucking Adonis right before his eyes.
“Ilya-” was all Shane managed before strong arms were wrapped around his waist and lifting him off the ground in a greeting all too familiar from years ago.

“Er, hello, I am, ah, Ilya.” He manages to say, letting a grin form on his lips when he realizes he didn’t mess up his words and say something wrong. He looks at the other boy, waiting for him to say something until a second passes. The smile on his lips slowly fades as he tilts his head, a deep pit forming in his stomach. “Это было плохое решение. Мне не следовало с ним разговаривать. Он, наверное, услышал от других детей, что я плохо говорю по-английски.”— his brain uselessly supplies.
He almost tries to run away before the boy pulls a piece of paper from the pocket of his shorts. He scribbles something on the paper before shakily getting up and giving it to him.
‘Hi, I’m Shane.’ The paper reads, Ilya blinks, he wonders why the boy— Shane— won’t speak but he isn’t going to ask him about it. Maybe he just doesn’t like speaking. He can’t blame him. Instead, he nods his head, hands the paper back and smiles at him, “Shane. That is nice name. Very Canadian.” He jokes and Shane sheepishly nods his head, a small smile curling on his lips.
OR
After moving to Canada, Ilya struggles to learn and speak English. He becomes friends with Shane Hollander who does not speak at all.

Summary
November 1984. Steve and Billy discover they are soulmates but to protect them both from Neil, Billy lies and says he doesn’t want Steve, doesn’t need a soulmate, he isn’t gay, Steve had better stay away.
July 1985. The Mind Flayer takes Billy and uses the buried soulmate connection between the boys to force Billy compliant and to distract Steve from investigating with the Party.
Tricked into thinking his soulmate finally wants him, Steve falls head over heels for (Not) Billy, but when the Sauna Test proves ‘possession’, Steve’s entire world collapses.
In the aftermath of Starcourt, Billy’s body and mind are broken, Steve’s heart and soul are fractured and each step towards healing is an uphill battle as Billy desperately tries to make amends and Steve rejects him at every turn.
There aren’t enough stitches in the world to heal the betrayal and heartbreak tearing the soulmates apart, but in the very quiet moments between doctors appointments, nightmares and breakdowns… maybe Steve and Billy can still learn how to love each other.
