Summary
Jonathan can’t pinpoint when these feelings for Steve developed, but sometime over the months since the final battle, they had. It started as simply needing to hear the other man’s voice, to know he was alive when the nightmares got too bad and Jonathan was plagued with images of his enemy-turned-friend plunging to his death. He didn’t mean to start to enjoy the calls. Sometimes they talk about whatever comes to their minds, sometimes they simply sit in silence, but it always ends with Jonathan’s heart beating a little faster, and a familiar sort of energy buzzing under his skin.

Maybe Max didn’t want to talk to the Party, but maybe she’d talk to someone else — someone who could better relate to how she was feeling.
And Will knew someone, someone very close to him, who had been through some similar experiences to Max, who would understand what was going on.
And maybe, just maybe, he might be able to help her.

Summary
“Take Max, right, it means a lot to her that you come to pick her up without any complaints, that you don't get angry when she wants to stay longer." Jonathan stated firmly.
"Why would I get mad? She wants to hang with the other shitheads and, hell, they all need that.” Steve answered with a sincerely confused tone.
"That's the difference.” Jonathan said with a light chuckle.
"What difference?” Steve asked, his voice more confused.
"The difference between you and Billy.” Jonathan replied and Steve’s head snapped up. "I'm not saying she is trying to replace Billy with you but, all she knows from boys our age is for them to get mad, yell, and hurt her. She is surprised every time you do the opposite."
or, after the events of Starcourt Jonathan comforts Max by showing her he understands the messy feelings of abusive households and then, Jonathan and Steve bond over their love for the kids.
