To feel an ache in his chest was hardly unfamiliar. In the months following his brawl with the Seine, Javert was no stranger to untraceable pains; his broken ribs and water-logged lungs had seen to it that his recovery was one long and agonizing. Though, it was not any more agonizing than the mental anguish, the spiritual torment of waking almost every day to Jean Valjean at his bedside.
Yet, when Javert felt a pain rise in his breast, he thought it most odd.

He is not wet. That is his first realization upon waking. His throat is raw and his muscles ache. When he sits, a headache washes over him and fatigue reigns. The room is dark, though a faint light shines through an open door opposite him. It’s merely cracked and the orange light flickers and dances, promising fire.
There are only two possibilities through that door: Hell or Jean Valjean; Javert isn’t certain there’s a difference.

”Cosette’s flight was cancelled because of the storm,” Valjean said. “She’s going back to school soon, so she needs to pack, and the trains are booked, and they can’t rent a car, and they don’t have money for a hotel, and I need her safe and home. So I’m going to get her.”
”You’re going to drive six hours in a blizzard on your own to then drive six hours back in a blizzard?” Javert said. “Not a chance.”
“My daughter needs me,” Valjean said, scraping at the ice crusted on the windshield. “I’m going.”
“I know that. I mean that I’m coming with you.”
