So why are you so damn worried about this?These are the questions Huckleberry Finn asks himself as he sits by the river with Tom on a hot June night. It's been years since he'd decided to be a sinner, through and through, and though he struggled a bit at first, it wasn't too hard in the years following. He mostly just smoked too much and skipped church and took the Lord's name in vain, and most importantly, did his best to help any slave that needed it. And in doing all this, he grew up to young adulthood with the general population of St. Petersburg agreeing with the conclusion he once reached: Huck Finn was damned from the start, a born sinner. He hadn't grown up right; he couldn't help it. He was just destined to burn.

Her smile is soft, her laugh is like summer, and Frenchy thinks she must taste like pink lemonade. Sandy doesn't wear much lipstick, or any makeup for that matter, but her lips are a pale pink that matches her sweater. She's grinning and tugging on her necklace, and something about it makes something in Frenchy's chest ache a bit.

"It's nice to meet you, Inge," I say, and it's the truth. "I'm glad to know someone cared about him when he was a kid."
Inge blushes immediately but looks somewhat proud too. "I'm glad he has someone looking after him now." Her voice is soft and musical, and it's calming to hear. "I've been so worried about him ever since he left. Tell me, how did you meet him?"
And so, even though it may benefit me more to be sleeping, we begin to tell stories.

The thing is that Sonic’s…interactions with Shadow have been characterised by nothing but contradictions. And Shadow hasn’t yet learned how to not be frustrated by it.
Their first meeting. Sonic looking up at him with fear and hostility, but also curiosity and wide-eyed sincerity. Sharing the emeralds with him and trusting him enough to destroy the Ark even when every other moment before that was laced with uncertainty and hesitance. Reaching for Shadow before he fell to Earth - gold and blue flickering across his fur like static - even though Shadow had treated him with nothing but aggression and disdain to that point.
Calling Shadow his rival, complaining about his meanness and dark scowl, but still turning up at his door to challenge him to a race and pushing at Shadow’s shoulder in a way that can’t be described in any other way than friendly.

Shadow struggles with nightmares, memories, feelings, and the mortifying ordeal of being known. Sonic makes it harder. But also makes it easier.

When Sonic messages, it's usually one of two things. Either he's bored and deciding to make it Shadow's problem, or he's updating the other on an Eggman attack, as if Shadow doesn't already know the instant the Doctor decides to make an appearance. So when his phone starts incessantly beeping with message notifications, Shadow lets out a long-suffering groan, digging it out of his quills and bookmarking the page of the novel he had been so happily reading.

Summary
After gifting Shadow his den so he has somewhere safe to stay while on the run, Sonic promises to keep his fugitive identity and their growing friendship a secret so he can protect him. Meanwhile, the Wachowski's are under strict orders from G.U.N. to report any sightings of Shadow's whereabouts and are totally clueless to the stowaway hiding in their back garden.
However, Sonic’s plans to keep both sides of his life from colliding are dashed when Tails finds out he’s been sheltering Shadow, and now it’s only a matter of time before the rest of the family catch on, too.
Sonic is faced with the option to come clean and betray Shadow’s trust by admitting everything to his family, or jeopardising Maddie and Tom’s livelihoods by staying silent and deceiving G.U.N.
Unless, or course he just maintains a perfect balance without letting his two lives overlap. That should be fine so long as he can keep his (probably, maybe, definitely romantic) feelings for Shadow under wraps.
What's the worst that can happen?
